Mobile reception with heated screen

Featured Replies

Having just purchased a Superb 3 estate 280 with heated front screen I am now having problems making and receiving telephone calls.

Car is 3 weeks old tomorrow 1000 miles and when making or receiving calls I get half way through a call and it drops.

Anyone else with the same problem?

Anyone know a fix?

Damn good racing car though!!!

Previous car Superb 2 OK but had normal screen

I don't have a heated screen in my Superb, but I had a Mondeo with a heated screen, which used to block my satnav GPS signal. In the end, I had to fit an external aerial.

Does your car have the 'phone box' feature?  It's supposed to boost your phone signal.

No problem at all on O2 network all works very well

Fine on EE too on 2G/3G network stations.  Can't answer for 4G coverage.  GPS is affected though....and has been discussed on here before.

I've not experienced any issues on EE 4G.  Though there's one spot when I get into our village where my DAB will distort for a split second.  It doesn't do it on the way out in the morning, just on the way home from work

I have an Octavia with heated screen, fine wire system and there has never been a signal issue (other than just the usual crappy network dropout areas).

Not sure what the heated screen system is on the Superb but I've got one on order and wouldn't expect any issues.

The Superb's heated screen uses an embedded microns-thin metal film that covers the majority of the screen. It's taken from fighter aircraft canopy technology and under certain lighting conditions the screen appears gold when viewed from outside.

Unlike the wire system it reduces radio signal strength through the screen, enough to block the very weak signals from GPS satellites, which is why it's caused anguish for some who prefer to use portable SatNav or use their phones for SatNav. It also means you need to be careful where you locate a GPS enabled DashCam.

How the screen affects mobile phones depends entirely on distance, direction and number of phone masts (cells) within range. Generally the screen should pose no problems.

My experience with the "phone box" option mentioned earlier is that it improves indicated signal strength in poor signal areas by one or, very occasionally, two bars out of five. It's not much but probably enough to maintain an otherwise lost connection.

I have the heated windscreen mentioned above. Having tested the GPS signal with a GPS tester there is no difference in signal strength with the Heated screen on or off, also there is no difference in GPS reception inside or outside the vehicle. Mine cannot be the only vehicle that has no GPS Phone or Radio problems. Suggest owners with problems have their vehicles checked with the GPS testers.

The Severn Bridge tag worked fine on my MkII with a heated screen and the tag's now in my MkIII with a heated screen and it too has worked fine, though I've only had the car for 5 weeks and I've used tag twice so far.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Core Prime (Tesco) and a works blackberry (EE).  Both work fine when in my pocket in the car.
