MY12 or MY13? & some other questions.

Featured Replies

Having had a Fabia 3 for the past 2 years and loving it, wifey talked me into an Octavia. She found an automatic MKII wagon, 108k km, advertised as a 118TSI 1Z MY12, at an unbelievable price!

The REVS (Oz) encumbrance check said it was a 118 TSI1Z MY13 (first retail date being 2013) The only record in the Service schedule being retailed on 22/2/2013 apart from a buyer’s name? Is there somewhere on the vehicle I can establish MY12 or MY13?

In looking for an Octavia I did a lot of research worrying about cambelts/DSG’s etc, so more questions.

The Service schedule says it’s a CDAA so it’s a 118TSI 1Z - yes?

Is the DSG 7 speed or 6? REVS says 7 SP Auto Direct SHI ?? Is it sealed or can the oil be changed?

The original Banner battery needed recharging as it wouldn't start on day 2. The dash then showed an (orange) power-steering (PS) problem but the steering works ok. The 'car-skidding' symbol also came-up. Are these just a computer reset due to low battery? (The PS sender is integral with the physical steering mechanism so let's hope! I'll try the driving methodology to fix the PS found onsite when car regoed.)

It was in a bit of a state but cleaned up well:

This is interesting: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7j64kh2kicuyanc/chain.jpg?dl=0 Page 105 of one of the manuals I think?

Any comments well regarded.

Check the 10th digit of the VIN number:

- C = MY12

- D = MY13

If you've had the battery out, the steering light will be on. I tend to go full lock left, full lock right and centre the steering to clear it. Alternatively, a short drive should also clear it.

If it is a 7 Speed Twin Dry Clutch DSG (DQ200) then the OIl does not need or get changed unless part of the World Wide Recall where the VW Group decided for safety sake to change Synthetic Oil to Mineral & do a software update, and someplaces in the world fit a new MCU.

(in Europe which is not part of the 'Wider World' just change the OIl & do the software update'. '34F5'.

By 2013 the DQ200 should have Mineral oil in from the Factory and it is filled for life and does not need changing unless some faults appear from 2013-2015.

So that happened and now VW Group have a Software Update '34H5'  for some DQ200 to stop them losing oil.

VORSPRUNG DURCH TECHNIK

If you want to know what you get in Australia ask Skoda Australia in writing, and before you buy check what has been done under Service Campaigns or might need doing.

I thought they ran the 6Sp DSG as the torque would be right at the limit of the manufacturer imposed limit for the DQ200 7Sp. I am not 100% though, check on your test drive if the indicator goes into D6 or D7 60MPH / 90 KMH.  Or do a full VCDS scan. The wet 6SP DSG requires oil and filter changes every 40k miles.

You've probably reviewed the engine failures thread for 1.8/ 2.0 TSI in the start of these forums?  The timing chain tensioner and piston / ring problems are potential terminal problems for the engine and cover EA888 1.8 and 2.0 variants. You do see a regular but small number of these issues appearing on these forums. But as time goes on, they must be catching a larger and larger portion of remaining cars that haven't had treatment.

If it is after 1st quarter 2012 manufacturer, you should be in a stronger position than most, it should have the latest tensioner revision "K". There were changes a few months after that in the 1.8, AFAIR  for piston and ring improved designs.

I haven't drive the 1,8TSI but have the 2.0 TSI and they are a good flexible petrol engine. Not scorchingly fast, but comfortable.  The two mentioned faults are by far the most serious and do not affect everyone .  There are a few other (less severe) vulnerabilities with the engine you can read about in many posts (search out things to look for etc)  and the platform itself like suspension, bodywork but mostly smaller niggles.

Thanks Awayoffski.

10th is C - C207XXXX  but alongside the VIN is CDAA?  Also GBOX/paintNo/IntEq/EngPoOut/Engine code there's : NAT LFBL-2G2G CS 118KW CDAA & the REVS engine number is CDA2XXXXX and the first retail date 2013? REVS say it's an MY13?? So I guess it's an MY12 and REVS got it wrong? REVS also says year of manufacture 2012?

Few things. CDAA is the engine type code. The engine number will always start with the first 3 characters of the engine type code.

CDAA is an EA888 series engine as referred to in my earlier post.

MY is not necessarily aligned to calendar years of manufacture. It wasn't for VW in the past. MY can start in a certain week of production prior to the year referred to in MY.

On the top cam chain cover there is normally a barcode with engine number and a date / time of production. That is pretty much the manufacture date [unless the engine has been changed out or the sticker plate altered]. On the front passenger pillar some vehicles include a manufacture date along with axle loads etc. (mine doesn't include the manufacture date). The hinges for the rear doors, visible from the same place as the compliance plate usually have a wk / YY production stamp as well.

As @Awayoffski mentions there are some service campaigns on the 7SP dry clutch DSG, in some regions they are more thorough than others. This should be checked to have been carried out. The torque limit I recall for the 7SP was referred 250NM and from my recall the 118kw TSI was near to that limit but it seems it should be running the 7SP DSG.

Plenty VW Group vehicles had or might have 184 lb / ft (250Nm) & 7 Speed DQ200,

including Euro 6 VW Polo GTi 1.8TSI 192ps. (142kw)

Yes, but if my memory serves correctly,  VAG have limited torque production on some engines to allow fitment.

Yes the Euro 6 VW Polo GTI 1.8TSI 192 PS / 142 kw as an example.   320Nm with the Manual Box and 250 Nm when the DSG is fitted yet they have the same 0-62 mph & Max Speeds.

Vorsprung Durch Technik.  Make it up to suit.....

Not all DQ200 DSG Software is the same, this is to match the vehicles power outputs as you see if you check out HP Products Australia Software Updates.

Plates went on today, short 10 km drive all lights out! Nice beast for wifey to drive!
