Fabia not starting (fuel issues)

I disagree re Variable Vane/Variable Geometry turbos;

My first turbodiesel was a 1994 Mk4 Golf "Umwelt" 1.9TD with indirect injection, minimal electronics, wastegated turbo, and no intercooler, purchased at 3yrs old from a VW dealership at Warwick.   Wastegate was jammed so no boost, place in Chesterfield freed that up, and I got some boost!

Later, had an intercooler fitted by Allard Engineering at Monmouth, a big front-mount, also a boost gauge so I could see what was happening. And Allards tweaked the fuel pump a little, though we never got it rolling-roaded.  Best MPG 60.

Next was a '52 plate Ford Fiesta 1.4tdci, again these are wastegated and no intercooler, ladyfriend also had one, same year, same setup, boost from about 1,600rpm. Best 67MPG.

Fabia 1.4tdi PD came next, '04 plate, is side-mount intercooled, and again was wastegated turbo, with little acceleration below 2,000rpm. Best 76.5MPG.

'07 plate Roomster, 1.9tdio PD, my first TD with variable-geometry, and as I stated, a very different driving experience, with a gradual build from just over 1,000rpm up to 2,000, after which full thrust available. Had this about 4yrs now. Usually around 63MPG, have had worse and better from it.

    take off the cam box and give the injector bolts a nipup,if this temporally helps the problem you could be looking at injector seals and bolts

  • If you get a short piece of wire and put 2 spade crimps on the end you can push that into the relay base to run the pump constantly (make sure you pick the correct pair of terminals)   You s

  • With the relay out it can't run. The relay has 4 connections. A pair that energises the relay and a pair that powers the lift pump when the relay contact makes once the relay is energised.

Richard, we're splitting hairs here, most of the engines you mention are early 90's designs irrespective of vehicle registration date, I generalised slightly but the thrust of my point is reasonable. PD and CR turbo diesels use VGT as a rule because the injection system is electronically controlled and not mechanical.

I would have thought the pd 105 is a non VGT turbo as i thought they were only fitted to pd130 and above.

I may be wrong though

Hi Clarendon,

Roomster is definitely VGT, it was already giving a healthy 117bhp BEFORE Darkside began work on it, it now does well north of 130bhp...., on standard small intake and airbox with standard paper-element air filter and standard un-modified exhaust system. Darkside Developments agreed it was VGT; it has a complex vacuum control box, which used to "sigh" very loudly when I switched engine off; replacement sourced via Darkside, sighs no longer!

The 1.9 PD105 engines were pt together after the PD100, 115, 130 and 150 so it had to have really. The PD130 didn't have as advanced EGR set-up either. Also, as above, the vacuum controls were a bit different too.

I stand corrected then, was thinking of the pd100 being the same as the 105 but obviously no

Could just be a very simple problem. I had this due to low mileage and build up od muck in the EGR & SHUT OFF VALVE. At the rear of the engine, there's a air intake tube which goes to the filter. Mid engine ,there's a metal unit( EGR ?) , with a SOLENOID VALVE THINGY at the side. My interpretation of operation of this (fuel shut off ?) is that at switch off, it toggles to shut fuel off, then opens. Mine had shut off ,but not opened . I had this happening occasionally till I routinely took it out for a burn . Cure when giving problems was to flick the rear protrusion ,and then mine started without problems. No doubt some poster will be better able to direct you to this
