Weird Space-saver Size. Help Please.

Featured Replies

Enjoying my Yeti immensely, but.....don't feel confident with the 'gunk' & ' pump' in the boot. Anyway, I went & bought a polystyrene false floor & tool kit from a Skoda dealer on Fleabay, looked great when fitted.

I then proceeded to buy a 'space-saver' from a breakers on the same site. His auction did not give the tyre size, but stated 16" wheel 'suitable for all Yeti's' 2009 to 2017.

Well, today i've recieved the space-saver & it just doesn't look right. It's about 600mm lower than my car wheels (205/60 r16) & it doesn't look wide enough to support my car.

The tyre size is T125/70r16 96m & the rim is VWAG 3 1/2J x 16 et 25.5.  Also the wheel will not sit right on top of the polystyrene tool-kit moulding. Is the polystyrene boot kit meant for a full-size wheel? P.S. used to be ok with my Fab, am I out of my depth with my Yeti lol.

My apologies if this should have been posted in the wheels section.

not sure if posted in correct category.

That wheel is not for a Yeti.

The correct size spare for the yeti is 195x60xR16

Hi Rick,

Is this size 195/60 R16 the 'space-saver' size? The one i've bought sure doesn't look right. Check out the ET on my post.

Thanks for reply.

I can concur with RickT. When I collected my new Yeti I ordered a spare and it came with a 195x60xR16. This is a space saver as it is smaller than the 225x50xR17 fitted.

Colin

As Rick and Colin say, that is NOT a Yeti spare wheel and is totally unsuitable and illegal. Do NOT use it.

The correct size of spare wheel is, as stated, a 195/60r16 wheel and tyre

Thanks for responses & advice. I thought something was wrong as soon as I offered the wheel up to my yeti wheel, & the fact that it doesn't sit on the factory boot kit properly (it just hangs on the polystyrene & rocks about). Even with the screw-wheel tightened fully down. Like the wheel is not deep enough to sit on boot floor.

Llanigraham, I do not intend to use it, tomorrow I will message the seller to say I want a refund. As an aside, seller is an established seller who deals mainly in Space-Saver wheels. It looks like an argument is in the offing then.

ET should be 45 - 50

Forgot to say...my yeti is '63 reg pre-facelift S trim & tyre size is 205/60 R16. Cheers.

Hi Urrell.

Yes, but would that ET be the same if it was on a nearly plate/dish shape rim?? This wheel i've bought is only 3 1/2J & a 125 tyre?? I'm thinking either the seller doesn't know what he's selling, or i've been duped.......

Or i've just not done my homework properly. Anyway, i've already done a 'return this item' as the seller didn't state the tyre size in auction, just the rim diameter.

God....I should really have done my homework. P.S. 195 sounds about right for the false floor kit.

Some yetis have different size tyres but the spare is the same size for all variants From memory the rim is 6J and the offset is ET50.

This will fit perfectly with the false floor kit.

Yes Rick, think you've answered my original question, this wheel is so thin, it just hangs on the top of the skoda boot kit, & wobbles all over the place even when tightened down.

3 1/2J rim, seems a laugh! I have now ordered a 195. Thanks for all the help.

Mally.

the correct spare wheel should have a max speed warning written in yellow writing on it.

You are so right  Sad555, anyway...i've gone & ordered one from the no.1 skoda people then I know it's good. Expensive, but only the best for my 'Henry'. (My reg ends in NRY), wifey just had to name him.

Thanks again for the help, I knew I could count on you.

I have found that a full size wheel fits under the raised floor, so no need for a restricted speed space saver wheel!

That's right, the floor has a double hinge so it lay's flat when the punctured wheel is stowed underneath.

Hi survey & RickT,

Thanks for that, I was wondering about the 'big lump' left in the boot after a puncture.  So i've ordered a genuine spare, 195/60 r16 should fit nicely under the false floor/boot thingy & if the worse happens, the 205/55 r16 broken wheel will fit in also.

As an aside.....unless i've got it wrong, I thought notwithstanding the width of the tyre, a 60 r16 will be bigger than a 55 r16??  Thoughts......

Mally.

Yes by about 8mm over the diameter.

60% of 195mm

55% of 205mm

Hmmmm..... So don't they do a 195/55 R16 spare then? Does the 8mm not make any difference when driving. I appreciate the wheel is speed restricted.

Rick, that 8mm extra makes it a damn tight fit in the floor kit. Just fired a query off to no1 skoda, just to be sure, though I did send them my vin number, so assuming it's the right size.

Mally.

@Wheelie1 - Back at your original point, the wheel you bought sounds like it's a space saver size alright. What I don't know is whether or not UK Yetis were ever offered with space savers.

Ken, the original (125/70 R16) wheel was described as 'suitable for all yeti models' by the fleabay seller & that's all he sells (spacesavers). When I placed it alongside my wheels, it was about 4" lower, & the look of the tyre gave me the impression that it would peel off the rim on turning, honestly, it looked scarey! Also, Llanigraham's comment re legality of that wheel.

Like yourself, i'm also not sure whether the spacesaver was offered as an option in the UK. Surely, from the factory you could order the option though??

It fits ok. 8mm is nowt.

When you need to get the wheel in/out take out the storage box on the right hand side (it's not fastened in) gives ya more room to play.

Yeah... thanks for that tip Rick, might make things easier. I fitted the false floor kit & as you say, the box on the right is not fastened down, unlike the other two. My boot does look cosy now & being the dinosaur that I am (lol) I now have no fear regarding pumping goo & hoping for the best.

I'me a dinosaur too, but decided my days of changing wheels by the roadside are over - too dangerous for a start. Will now call AA (Skoda Roadside Assistance free) and get them to fit a universal spare to get me home if I ever have a puncture.

Skoda Yeti's in the UK were never offered with the ridiculously narrow space-saver spare, and as far as I can see nor in the EU either.

As I said earlier the Type Approval docs are EU wide, and specify the larger size only.
