Heat from panoramic roof?

Featured Replies

As per title,

I'm speccing a new blue VRS TDI 4x4 and considering the pano roof essentially to entertain the 3 boys&girls behind...

But where I live is very very hot in Summer (at least for my tastes...) and I'm getting worried that the large dark glass would get hot as hell under the sun and over our heads!

Does anybody have some experience about it?

TIA,

Stefano

Does not seem to be an issue on very hot UK days, particularly as you can tilt the front to get airflow. Suspect you would make more of a difference switching to either white or black paint then going panoramic. You feel the suns' heat when you open the roof, obviously.

Thank you Andy,

I had considered white moon and tried to convince myself with a mantra sounding: "I like it, I like it, it's smart,..."...

... but I definitely can't!

So here we have the third racing blue Skoda after a MkII VRS TDI and actual MkIII Elegance 4x4

I negotiated - sort of - not to get the racing green (it's a company car, after all...) for the pano roof

Get the roof!! It's awesome & my kids love it!

We were in France at 35 degrees recently. No issues. Aircon on, roof shut, blind open. The glass on the roof is tinted.

If you do feel heat coming through, which I think is unlikely, just close the blind.

I too have the Pan roof.

Tilt the roof , turn off the internal sensor and lock the car.

Park up, slide the visor across, all is cool, well worth the money and if it get noisy you can still close the roof at 80 mph +

Had panos on my two Roomsters.  Heat was never an issue.

Wish I'd specified the (b****y expensive) pano on my Yeti.

yep as others have said heat is not an issue with my pan roof.... but i do live in ireland....B)B)

Those who have fitted them on Australian forums don't complain about heat issues and highly recommend them as kid pleasers.

The tinted glass will get very hot to the touch when left standing in the sun as the tint is designed to absorb the energy rather than let it through.

I don't have a pano roof but I do have a white car with tinted windows and the windows are always much hotter than the paintwork.

On the move the extra heat of the glass is largely dissipated by the outside moving air.

Close the blind when parked.

having the Pano roof here In Australia in summer definitely have to have the blind closed.

Thank you all gents!

I think I'll quickly learn to manage the blind and kids will be happy!

I will probably pass through Genoa mid of September on my way to Spain, so you can see for yourself what you've configured. :D Yes, some people complain and dislike panorama, but personally I enjoy sun and light in the cabin. Like everyone else, kids love it.

It is a bit warmer, these days is ~40 in Belgrade, but pluses severely overcome minuses. Certainly hope I will be able to buy next car with sunroof too...

I've got the panoramic roof on my Yeti and it doesn't seem to get too hot when the blind is open, saying that when I had my Octavia Estate, I did sit in an L & K spec Octavia Estate with the panoramic sunroof and couldn't believe how much headroom had been lost compared to my own car. In the drivers seat I had to put the seat as far down as I could, which left it far too low for my comfort. No such issues with the Yeti because of the basic design having that much more internal headroom to start off with.

So maybe the sunroof is not too desirable an option in the Octavia if you're over 6 foot tall, otherwise fair enough.

I have the pano roof on my Octy 3, and it is cooler in what passes for the UK summer than the previous Octy 3 that didn't have it. I believe the glass is heat reflective? Never quite been so sunny that I have to close the blind though the Amundsen can get a little hard to see. Only issue with the roof has been its unreliability, namely a motor failing after 3 weeks, and then 5 further visits to deal with the seals sticking together causing graunching noises. It still does it now any time it is opened at more than 25 C. Shame as it otherwise is a lovely thing and makes the car a much airier place.

I have the panoramic roof on my 2017 VRS estate and it's great for my son when he's in the back as it does lighten up the interior when the blind is retracted. I've found it does reflect the heat well but when it's 25+ C the actual roof gets too hot to touch especially the metal surround. If I was speccing a new car now, it would be an estate, I'd definitely go for the panoramic roof as I'd really miss it having had it :-)

Ive had the pano roof on a BMW 320D and Volvo.

Summer here are regularly 30+ during the day & there was no problem with the heat from the roof.

If its too bright you can just pop the sunshade across.

As others have said, probably during the summer you will mostly keep the cover closed but its great in the evenings, spring & even winter when you have a nice clear day.

I don't have it in the Octavia & its definately something I regret not paying for.

I have the pano roof on a black wagon in Australia and the heat was never a problem... if anything, I feel like when it's cold I need to remember to close the blind as it seems heat dissipates a lot faster with all that glass!
