Superb Elegance headlight xenon

Featured Replies

Friend of mine had a xenon bulb go in his Audi cost nearly £200 from the dealer.

What are the replacement bulb options for these factory fitted fancy lights on the Superb that do a dance when car is started. I presume I have directional xenon headlights on mine.

With that that in mind my headlights act as DRL's where I see other combi superbs using the fog lights, can I change that with some clever VCDS programming. I still want some form of DRLs?

If your Superb is using the dipped headlights as DRL's then someone has been fiddling with the settings using VCDS.

A 2011 Superb has dedicated DRL's next to the foglights...

It's the headlights for sure yes.

The headlight switch is on auto. And the dash light only says headlights on in tunnels or the dark but nothing changes as far as I can see. Also that's all side lights on rears as well.

I find it a waste. Just something up front as drls only enough.

Car has cornering fogs too.

Are the rear lights on as DRL as well?

MY 2011 onwards Superbs (and I believe all estates) have a DRL bulb and a fog bulb in the lower lighting (like silver's picture above)

Previously they only had a fog bulb in that enclosure.

I agree with silver, it sounds like someone has changed some settings with VCDS so the car isn't using the lighting in the 'factory' configuration

The bulbs aren't cheap for xenons, but not £200 (just a nice dealer markup there :) )

I will take a look at the fog light area. So do @Solarstorm or @silver1011 have xenon headlights with the fog DRL arrangement ?

If I remember an Octy 2 arrangement there were 2 options pre-fl American and another. One just out front fogs at say 50% brightness and one of them also put the rear lights on. So maybe a similar arrangement here. I do seem to recall the maxidot has an option for DRL, wonder what happens if I turn off?

£200 was a discounted fitted price at Audi bulbs alone is £72+vat at TPS. Where else can decent bulbs be obtained if required as that is quite expensive if like his one went pop at around 75k?

I've got halogen; but the fog light unit is the same between cars with and without xenons

Other counties have DRL on at the back, but not the UK by default for most cars (Volvo might be an exception there)

There are various online retailers for car bulbs and all seem to stock xenon bulbs

The very early MkII Superbs (2008/2009) did not have dedicated DRL's, only front foglights in the lower bumper.

Some of the very early cars utilised dipped headlights and rear tail lights as DRL's. When the switch is in Auto and the sensor decides it needs lights on then there isn't anything else to turn on, only the little green dipped headlight icon on the dash.

From 2010 the dedicated DRL's were introduced into the same housing as the foglights, irrespective of if the car had halogen or bi-xenon headlights.

On the MKII Octavia's that aren't fitted with dedicated DRL's it is possible to code the car to utilise the dipped headlights instead. I suspect this is what has been done to your car. There were two options:

1) North American - Handbrake off = dipped headlights on (no tail lights). Handbrake on = dipped headlights off.

2) Scandinavian - Ignition on = dipped headlights, tail lights and number plate lights. Ignition off = all lights off.

If your Superb is a 2011 is should definitely have the dedicated DRL's down by the foglights. You just need someone with VCDS to correct the coding.

I have checked the car today. It definitely has 2 bulbs in each fog light. However I cannot make the non fog bulb come on with any combination of switching. The fogs also come in with cornering.

So it needs some VCDS reprogramming. What needs to change?

Find someone with VCDS near you here...

I had a xenon bulb go and Skoda wanted a small fortune for one zenphillips.

Ended up buying a pair online for 20 quid and they have been great .

I suspect Bit 6 has been disabled, would you agree?

I think the Superb's are different to the Octavia II, I activated DRL's via fog's for my mate on his 2009 Superb. He had the option on his Maxidot to activate 'Daytime Driving Lights', which used his dipped beam , so I simply selected the option on VCDS below:

Spot the difference ...

Left one is a Zen Phillips at about £167 plus vat (I got quoted from Skoda for 1!)

Right one is a hid brand off the internet (20 quid for 2!)

Had them both in the car for 3 months now and no issues, however they were more blue in colour (6000k)...im not sure what the original Zen Phillips are.

A genuine Philips XenArc D1s bulb is about £50 from a decent supplier :)

Euro parts quoted me 80 quid for an after market

I'll stick with the 20 quid for two deal I think.

Mind sharing which corner of the internet you got them from?
