Acoustic laminated front windows - MY18 option in the UK?

Featured Replies

Hi all

I read in an article recently (can't remember which but can probably dig it out) that the MY18 Superb was getting acoustic glass as an upgrade option.

Had anyone heard of this or even managed to spec it on a UK order?

It sounds interesting because the one thing I feel with the Superb is that it lacks road noise isolation compared to its peers.

Thanks.

Probably a waste of money as they cut down the wind noise on the Mk3 which is what the acoustic glass reduces. Unfortunately the road noise will be unchanged.

On Mercs with acoustic glass fitted they have been complaints that the auto wipers aren't as effective.

By using acoustic glass the windscreen can be made thinner therefor weight saving.

Had accoustic front glass in a Citroen C5 - thought is was brillient - went from the C5 to Superb MK2 and noticed front end noise immediatly. S3 is a bit better but IMO would benefit from Acoustic glass.

Acoustic glass still won't reduce interior cabin noise transmitted up from the wheels. This is wear you need sound deadening materials within the car body and isolators between the suspension and the body which is where Skoda cut costs. You get used to that road noise but as soon as you go in a car where the noise is better managed it becomes obvious.

In Ireland, 'Acoustic insulated windows side and rear windows with Sunset tint' is available now as an option for €431.  I assume this will extend to the UK market also, if it hasn't already?  It will be interesting if any owners that opt for it notice any difference.

Cannot see why people complain about the noise levels in the Superb. To me they are low compared to anything we have previously owned (including a BMW).

If you want noisy try an Octavia. We have driven 4 now, 3 estates and a hatch. Both 2010 estates were truly dreadful, the road noise was painful even on a decent motorway surface. The 2016 estate was better but still way noisier than the Leon we were PX'ing. The 2016 hatch seemed OK on test (better than the estate) but once back in the Leon we knew it was not going to live in our garage.

Once in the Superb all was serene and over a 430 mile drive on an assortment of tarmac we have no complaints.

Hello,

does anyone know the code for double Glass front Windows? Are the laminate Windows available? Replacing the regular Windows with laminated ones requires other parts?

Thanks!

For that kind of money I'd be negotiating with the dealer for a tyre swap rather than spending it on the acoustic glass.

In Estonia front side accoustic insulated windows were 130 EUR as an option.

I got them and they are blody good.

As far as I can see, only VW Arteon (Superb in VW's posh disguise) got them in the UK as an option, VAG UK still prefers to lose private new car sales in the name of desperately keeping brand order, ie Skoda must be "budget" compared to equivalent VW, for a particular model you can only get stronger engines with bling skinny-tyre wheels and leather (losing comfort, spare wheel  and the rough road pack) and so on.

I'll get a factory order Mk3 Superb as soon as Skoda UK opens up options list, until then the money stays in the bank and I'd rather drive my trusty old Mk1, if it fails the next 3 cars on my list are Mondeo then Arteon then as a last resort a Superb. I put a limit on brand loyalty when I am asked to pay 50% more for an inferior car.  For me, the current Mk3 as specced in the UK is a downgrade on Mk1/2 in several aspects.

To anyone asking why acoustic glass is necessary, I own a 12 years old, 190k+ miles  Mk1 Superb and last year I have road tested the Mk3. It was immediately evident even at UK motorway speeds that there is more wind noise in the Mk3 than even in an 11 year old Mk1.  Shortly afterwards, Skoda Auto seemed to have agreed and introduced acoustic glass option for most/all countries in Europe...except the UK.

I've not yet progressed to a MKIII and might not yet do so as my car requirements are changing. However whilst my mkI was a fantastic car with great riding suspension (at the expense of a bit of wallow) and good road noise/wind noise (but my 1.9pd was gruff) my Superb II (petrol) is more refined - it has very little wind noise and on Michelin Crossclimates road/tyre noise is very low. It's very quiet indeed at 70mph.

I test drove the Karoq recently and found that it had a bit more wind/road/engine noise.

However noise can be subjective and clearly different tyres (Size and/or manufacturer) make a huge difference.
