It was a good idea at the time........

...to try and repair the rear centre air vent which one of the kids accidentally kicked.

Oh dear. Maybe you used the wrong type of cutlery this time.

best of luck with the fix (or replacement).

I brought mine trying to put my step-brother's recliner on the back seat.

I want to fix it myself but scared of making it worse, I also want to replace it, but the cost of a new one is ridiculous. I dare not ask Skoda how much they'd charge with labour.

Nothing looks snapped there - so I assume it clips back together somehow?

Try taking the other side apart to compare :-) Sorry I shouldn't joke. I bet a replacement costs a fair bit.

Bet it's not cheap mate, agree I dare not ask Skoda!

Yes it does "just clip" back together but you need 14 pairs of hands to do it.

The small flat metal locating bar (centre of picture) needs to be clipped into the 5 separate plastic vents, but they are secured on alternate sides on the clips. Just kept falling out whenever I tried. Attempted it over 2 hours but gave up in the end.

Definitely not taking the other one to pieces.

When we were trying to repair something fiddly at my work, we use to joke about that it was probably assembled by a silly we lassie, it canny be that hard.:D

£85 with VAT for the vent.

If you are out of options, you could take a risk on it and use tiny amounts of super glue to hold the fiddly parts in place temporarily (absolutely minimum you can get away with).  Then once complete, put the whole thing in the freezer.  Hopefully the contraction will break the now brittle bonds, if not give the controls a wiggle and cross your fingers.

Could I suggest something like vasilene (or better) a fairly heavy silicone grease to hold all the components together while you assemble it?

Maybe, left it for the time being now.

Tried that, worked for the outer ones but not the inner ones.

Blue tack?

Gaffer tape no one will notice.

He's tried and spent a lot of time on this and it's not worked. If this was now me I'd pay for a new one - someone said it's only £85.

Failing that, knowing it might happen again I'd glue it back together (Fixed in position) and refit the unit. It might get kicked again.

Maybe get a new one and in time repair the old one and either keep it just in case it happens again or sell it to the next person that has this issue to recoup some cost.

From the look of it, it wouldn't be long before someone else needs to repair/replace the vents.

It doesn't really matter to me - a) because I don't sit in the back and b) it's not my car (it's a company car, that's not to say I don't look after it)

It's only one side of the vents which doesn't adjust, the other side works fine and air still comes out. Might just super glue the broken one.

Claim it on expenses?

Coops did you manage to repair this as I've found that my little monkeys have done the same

My best advice if you cannot get it all back together again is to try somewhere like

http://www.motorhog.co.uk/

Or any large company that does vehicle breaking..

Alternatively be cheeky and look on ebay for something like this

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2016-Skoda-Superb-1-6-Diesel-breaking-breaker-/262993579608?hash=item3d3ba38e58:g:DSkAAOSw8HBZHv7l

Then get in touch and go   "You know that rear air vent........can I have it please???"....slip them a tenner and you might be surprised how many will say 'YES'....

my little sods broke the horizontal slider on mine last year. reckoned he was just adjusting it...

i took it to the main dealer - said its not good enough quality. replaced a day later with a new one under warranty. :)

  • 4 months later...

Mine has come apart now.  After an explosive sick event in the rear (the leather seats are very wipeable), I clipped a small airfreshner to the rear vent.  It wasn't quite in the right place so I pulled it out and it took the frame out with it.  Seriously weak design.  I plan to pull it out of the car and have a try at mending it later.  Has anyone done this with any success?

You'll need 2 of these then
