Due to change my vRS petrol 245 or Diesel?

Featured Replies

I'm currently on my second Octavia vRS Diesel running with a DTUK tuning box.

Looking to change it soon and seen some good deals on the 245 petrol. As it will be my 3rd I thought going to petrol might be a good change, so popped to a local dealer today. They didn't have a 245 in just a 230 to satisfy my curiosity I took it out for a test drive. Maybe I've just got used to driving a diesel but I wasn't overly impressed.

I believe the 245 has a higher spec as standard-electric seats would be handy.

Anyone driven both and have any comments? I do ~10K per annum so the difference in fuel at say 30 mpg or 50 mpg isn't insignificant about £800.

What didn’t you like about the 230?

I just wasn't bowled over with the performance like I expected to be, lacked the low down grunt of the D which I think for the kind of driving I do is more suited.

Fair enough. I have driven both petrol & diesel vRS’s and much prefer the refinement and power of the petrol cars, but each their own.

You said your diesel was mapped. Perhaps try (if you can) a mapped petrol. This will give a fairer comparison.

But are you really going to be using the full power and performance of the 245.

I've only got the 220 and I find that more than a enough and has more than enough power and speed to get me into trouble with the law.

A mapped TSI is still refined UNTIL you give it some beans then, its a whole different story.

At that mileage, 245 all the way!

If I was changing now I would go full-fat 245/DSG.

Gubmint almost declared war on Diesel and the Germans have ceased development on them.

I have a Pre FL 230,  fast, quite economical if driven nicely and the e-diff works in the twisties.

@Gwald coming from strong diesel, you definitely need little more adaptation to strong petrol. Being in the same shoes, my opinion is that diesel really doesn't offer anything better then TSI but MPG. I loved all my diesels before, but I now love turbo petrol engine even more.

Go for 245! I envy!

Don't forget the 245 only comes in four colours.  Might put you off.  245 does seem like something of a bargain if you want all the extra kit, and the standard items on the 245 will at least factor in the so called GFV if its a PCP unlike buying them as extras on the TD.

All things being equal I'd probably go for the disel but as someone rightly points out the 245 is better spec'd which has got me leaning towards it. There's only a tenner a month in it on the base cost plus having one for 4 years something a little nicer and different would be welcome. But the disel is such a good all rounder and with the tunning box offers decent performance too while return 50 plus mpg.

I’d be putting all costs into a spreadsheet and seeing what comes out cheaper over the entire term you’ll keep the car. You seem hung up on this 50MPG. It’s not the be all and end all of motoring costs.

I agree with @SC03OTT, But I'd also put the pros and cons of each version on a list too, such as:

Pros

245 petrol                                            diesel

faster                                                     cheaper to buy std

low Nox                                                larger colour choice

higher std spec                                   higher mpg

quicker to get to speed                     quicker in gear acceleration (probably)

black pack looks nicer(IMO)                       avaliable in 4x4

Cons

245 petrol                                                      Diesel

lower mpg                                                    costs more to get to the same spec as the 245

higher base cost                                           sounds like a tractor

only red, black, white and primer               particulates now kill puppies and kittens

joking side on the cons, as you are wondering on both engines, you are not that worried about the cost of running either of them.

Maybe not drive, but see if you can find a 245 to sit in (even if from an owner on here), you may well find it a nicer place to be with the extra spec, or you may go for neither of them and look somewhere else.

I went for Diesel DSG but have the feeling I've made a mistake. The Petrol was working out roughly €5k more than the Diesel to buy. Diesel tax (at the moment including 2018) €270, Petrol €390. Diesel still 10-15c per litre cheaper than Petrol at the moment. Diesel has better fuel economy. However what swayed me towards Diesel was the GMFV was around €15k, with the Petrol only getting around €200 better. However I think the nails are starting to get hammered into the Diesel coffin, and taxes etc within the next 3 years of owning are going to rise and overtake the Petrol. So probably my last Diesel car to buy.

I'm up in the lake district mate. Sod it im going to order the petrol I've decided and get my Mrs the disel

Basic 245 with no extras over here (Ireland) would be equivalent to over £39,000 instead of your £30,565.

The comfort from the electric seats & all the tiny small adjustments you can make to get the seat just right, are worth at least half the upgrade cost, the lumbar support in particular.

The willie waving abilities of a 7 DSG speed wet box, 300mm ventilated rear discs & of course the shiny front grill are all items you can't option on any other Octavia.

Oh & theres this display

Try £37,500 for a 184 DSG :crying:
