Battery and ignition issues

Featured Replies

My Skoda Octavia 2.0 Elite has refused to start. Am suspecting battery issues but all indicators and light on the dashboard are visible.

I had to jumpstart it and thought the alternator would charge the battery while i drive it around for like 2hours but as soon as i got home and put off the engine just to restart, it refused to start again. What could this possibly mean and what should i do.

@EhiJosh - When you first switch on, and before you try to start the engine, does the "low charge" warning light come on? If not, then one or both of the alternator control wires is probably broken.

@EhiJosh

Battery can go into deep discharge which alternator will not charge. Also the battery can have a faulty cell. In both these scenarios the battery can power lights etc. Deeply discharged batteries can be charged with some chargers, but normally replacement battery is the way forward.

@Chilled - That's true; I advised @EhiJosh to check the load wires first because that's a cheaper and easier fix than a new battery, and a new battery doesn't cure broken load wires anyway.

Great thought process! I hadn't ever thought that far; have had plenty of deeply discharged batteries, but never any faulty / damaged charge leads from the alternator.

@Chilled - Well, I've had my present car for over 12 years, had a control wire come disconnected, and am a tight bar steward as well... ;)
