Can't Add SmartLink+

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I've recently contacted Skoda to see if SmartLink+ can be added to my 66 plate Octavia SE Sport (with Amunsden Sat Nav). Here is their response:

Thank you for your recent contact to ŠKODA UK.  I am sorry for the delay in my response.

I have spoken with our Parts Support Team who have advised that Smartlink cannot be retro fitted on your
ŠKODA Octavia registration: YE66 UCS.

I understand this is disappointing news, if you require any further assistance or advice, please do not hesitate to contact us on the number below.

Now, I can see that the current batch of Skodas being sold come with SmartLink+ enabled on their Amunsden head units already, and was hoping to get it as Android auto is much more useful to me than the inbuilt sat nav.

Has anyone had it enabled? Was the Skoda lady talking out of her backside?

I bought my 16 plate VRS (Amundsen, MIB2) as an ex-demonstrator from a Skoda dealership. It hadn't been built with SmartLink activated but I requested this as part of my purchase. The sales guy wasn't initially sure if it was possible, but after checking confirmed that it was and this was all done for me by the dealer, so it's 100% possible to retrofit.

I'll ask the dealership to see if they can do it.

If they can it I hope it'll be free! I'd originally read that it was £90, but as all '17 plates and newer have it by default it would be a bit harsh for them to charge for buying a car a few months too early, especially as it won't cost them anything.

I'd seen £90 or £150, you might get lucky but as they need to generate a code with Skoda it might cost them more than just their time.

I think it's facelift that got it enabled out of the box.

It is, all 2017 Skodas seem to come with it enabled nowadays. Generating the code shouldn't cost Skoda anything either ("shouldn't", but we all know how these things go), the only reason I'd be willing to pay additional was if there is any physical work required, such as removing the head-unit. But I suspect it's a lot simpler than that...

What is Yours Amundsen Part Number? Is it start with 5Q or 5E?

If 5Q it's MIB2 so You can activate SmartLink with Your dealer for about 100€. For activation, dealer must connect with Skoda servers so it's not only code. Check if You have SmartLink menu.

If it's 5E as MIB1 You can have only MirrorLink, if it was activated during purchase.

My Part number starts 5Q, so it should be compatible. I'll see what the dealer says.

AFAIK there's no possibility to install SmartLink or MirrorLink on a MIB1 unit... Searched for a long time and never found any way to install it other than a Hardware update to a MIB2 unit  :speechless:

So DM Kieth just got back to me, they said if your unit has the SmartLink tile then it can be activated.... £170!!!!! That's ridiculous, especially considering that older non-nav head units have it by default (my brother has 2 '66 Fabias with it enabled, lowest spec), and now all Skodas have it activated.

It cost £150 extra to order a pre-FL Octavia with SmartLink. The prices quoted to get it added later seem quite reasonable.

Didn't the non-Nav pre-FL come with it already? Or was that just most Fabias?

AFAIK:

Pre-FL: Unavailable on MIB1 cars, always a paid (£150?) option on MIB2.

FL: Included as standard.

Source: Had a hire Focus with Car Play and decided that's my must have for an Octavia, so looking 65 plate onwards and prepared to have to pay/negotiate if I go second hand and it's not already enabled.
