MKIII MY17 vs MY18

Featured Replies

Cheers buddy, yeah thought the two had got confused :D

I’m still confused as to how I put the main beams “on” if required as apposed to “flash” which is the only function it appears to be able to do?

  • That's exactly what it does. It serves a reminder in Maxidot (and Nav screen if you have it) as to what the speed limit of the road is. No warning for speeding. Can be handy if you're on busy, unfamil

Reading back I think I've misread a couple of posts and confused the two techs - not helped by the fact they are almost identically named and the topic of conversation keeps switching between them!

Light Assist is simply Auto headlights - uses the Rain Light sensor to work out if the headlights should be on or not. The settings you mentioned about early, normal late have some bearing on this. To use it you just switch the lights to Auto. This has been standard on the VRS since the introduction of the MK3.

HBA - or Intelligent Light Assist is the thing that determines whether high beam is used or not automatically and dips the beam if required. This uses the Lane Assist camera to perform this function. The stalk is pushed back and there is a high beam symbol with an "A" shown.

Hope this clarifies.

If you have the option for Light Assist, this is what is also know as High Beam Assist or Intelligent Light Assist.

When you push the indicator stalk forward, you should have the headlight symbol with the A inside it. Your high beams will then go on and off automatically when your speed is above 57kph. The system disengages when speed is below 27kph.

On my car, it's a push forward to have them on for a prolonged period (blue high beam light lit on the RPM gauge). Then it's another push forward to turn them off.

Pull back to flash momentarily.

As a side note the new style for both the infotainment and Maxidot screens looks much better than the Pre-facelift. Even though the actual info displayed is identical B)

Ok so if I have lane assist I should be able to enable HBA? - I can see the option to enable HBA in Carista but didn't bother as I thought I would need more for it to work :)

I think you may struggle with Carista. I tried that with no luck and had to resort to VCDS. Depends also on what Year your car is too. The MY18 adaptation is slightly different to previous years.

Haha fair enough, no I’m not quite lucky enough to have MY18 ....mines a 16-Plate so it might work! May give it a go tomorrow!

All though I did try dipping mirrors when reverse is selected......my passenger mirror had an absolute dicky fit :-D lol so that had to be reset!

After my initial foray with Carista, I'm not that convinced it's the best way to perform adaptations. You don't really know what it's doing behind the scenes and have to trust that it's making the adaptations in the correct manner.

I posted pretty much the above in a thread where someone had used OBDeleven. Relying on generic apps is risky because as you say, you’ve no idea what’s being changed behind the scenes.  Given all the different specs and model years available, one app can’t fit all applications.

True, however on my previous car a Mk3 Fabia I found that almost all the adaptations worked fine! I have only ever had one problem and that was now on the Octavia with the mirrors.

But I do take your point that you don’t know what it’s doing! However I have found the support team really good.

  • 2 weeks later...

I took delivery of a brand new OBDeleven on Thursday.

Initial excitement was tempered by the lack of credits to activate any of the apps. Before anyone says you have to pay extra, the package I ordered was supposed to include 100 credits.  I'm hoping that this will be resolved on Monday.

It is possible to obtain free credits just by opening the Android application and watching adverts. This is limited to six credits per day but at least I've been able to save enough to make my first modification.

The device is now plugged in all the time as it's well away from any potential fouling from clothing. When I plugged it in for the first time and started the application on my phone, an update was needed. This took a few attempts to complete. After that, everything else has been a lot easier. Connecting takes just a few seconds. The response of the "gauges" is very quick.  Quite scary to see just how high the fuel pressure gets on a diesel injection system.

The model of my car was identified correctly. Phew. That should assuage any fears about "generic" apps making incorrect changes behind the scenes.

I've made my first modification. The somewhat simple guage sweep.

My L&K has keyless entry and ignition.  The instructions within the app detail removing the key from the ignition for five seconds.  I pressed the button to turn off the car and cracked open the driver's door to complete the cycle. Just to be certain, I closed the door, locked the car, unlocked the car, opened the door again, closed it again and pressed the START/STOP button and..........

It works!

I know it's only a silly little modification but it makes me happy.

OBDEleven is good but to get the most out of it you're better off doing the adaptations and coding yourself, rather than via the apps and credits. Only if you're confident enough and understand what you are changing of course! :)

I have every intention of going "pro" with OBDeleven now that I know it works with my Octy. That allows both short and long coding without the risks associated with dodgy dongle or the expense of the full VCDS. I paid about £40 for the adapter and postage which I think is great value.  IIRC the upgrade to pro is about £25 so a lot cheaper than forking out for loads of credits that don't necessarily match what I want to achieve.
