Re-programming a key

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I recently lost the spare remote key for my 02 Audi A4 Avant. A mate gave me the key from his Y-reg MKIV Golf that was written off a few months ago, and I've put a new blade on it and had it cut so I can now manually open and close the Audi with it.

This is useful as it means that if I do lock my key in the car I'm not totally screwed, but I just wondered if it's possible to reprogram the Golf key fully so that it will unlock the car remotely and let me drive with it? I've read varying opinions on it online and tried a couple of methods with no luck.

Cheers

Not a lot of point reprogramming as it will not have the immobiliser chip inside to allow you to drive it.

I read it as the OP put a new blade in his mates old fob so it would have the chip in it.
Might need VCDS/ VAG COM or a bloke in the know.

Reprogram the chip, of course.................I'm getting old..............

The key has three functions

Key blade to operate Mechanical lock

Remote fob to unlock and lock the car

Immobiliser Transponder to allow the car to start

You have done part one

The remote can be programmed with VCDS to unlock and lock the car providing it matches your existing frequency

Immobiliser chip probably needs to be replaced with a virgin one, then you need to get it adapted to your car. Not sure on the A4 if you can do it with just the SKC/pin

Either way you will need someone with Vag tacho or a similar tool

Thanks guys, that makes sense. I think I'll just keep this as a spare in case I lock my key inside the car, and fork out £180 for a new key at some point!
