New Dash Cam

Featured Replies

Had a Dash Cam fitted for a Xmas present but now away from home for a week with no access to the DVD instructions that came with the unit.

Does the system renew itself automatically or does the little card inside have to be taken out and refreshed every now and again?

I disconnect and reconnect the power cable when leaving the car for any length of time

Is this correct?

Appreciate any assistance as I am totally useless with technology so I am not sure the Dash Cam was the right sort of present for me as I am just coming to terms with the Sat Nav and other goodies on my L & K!!!

It will rewrite over the oldest recording. No need to do anything.

I've been leaving my dashcam plugged in 24/7 since Christmas with no issues so far.

As Chris said, pretty much all dashcams will save video to the SD card until it is full; at that point the oldest recordings are deleted to make room for new ones.

Many cameras also have an emergency save function which saves a segment of video to a separate folder on the SD card: this can be triggered by a shock on cameras that have a shock sensor, or there may be a button for you to hit if you want to be sure an incident is recorded. How the camera handles this folder being full can vary; on mine (Vicovation Opia 2) it stops saving new emergency recordings until I reformat the card or delete the files from that folder. You would need to check the manual that came with your camera to see if it has that function, and how it handles a full card.

Bearing both of these points in mind, if you record an incident while driving that you especially want to keep, make sure to copy it off the SD card as soon as you can to prevent the possibility of it being overwritten.

Some cameras will offer an automatic card format function - on mine it pops up a message once a month to ask if I want to wipe the card. Again, your manual will have details on that.

Is it plugged into the 12V / cigarette lighter?

If so I think it is a permanent live which will mean it is recording all the time.

I'd be tempted to get into the habit of unplugging it after each journey in case you forget before a longer period of being stood.

Or better still hard wire it into a switched live in the fuse box...

Or fit it with one of these Eborn units only £9 from AmazonB)
Constant power so can be used for parking incidents and switches of if battery gets too low about 11.5volts I think being using them for months in my cars and work great

Thank you all for your informative input.

The Dash Cam is plugged into the 12v cigarette lighter and I do undo and reconnect the device between journeys.

Hope I never have to rely on it but thankful that it does record over previous footage.

btw I have had my Skoda Superb 11 for 4 years now and still pleased about the way it drives.

Have received so many positive comments about the interior space, gadgets and driving experience.

Apart from wishing it was built in the UK, have really been pleased with the car.

Manage to get a real time 40+ mpg for a big 4 x 4 auto, which isn't bad!!

@highinthesky beef it up and you'll see 60 mpg on motorway easily:)

You mean an engine remap?

I can occasionally get the computer to show 55-60mpg but there is an approximate 15% difference in the real time figure

Yep, doing 50-70 mph - roadworks / average speed cameras - I can get 60mpg+ easily :) and when I need to overtake - no need to switch to "S" :)

Another benefit - it up shifts right after 1500 rpm - 40mph=5th gear, 50mph=6th and ~1200rpm.

I need to correct myself :(

4th = ~25mph,

5th = ~30mph,

6th = ~40mph.

:)

Is that the MFD economy or measured from brim to brim calculations?

On my last car the MFD error went from 15% to 35% after a remap which made it look far more economical than it really was.

My blackvue camera sd card requires frequent re formatting out of the camera else the date goes haywire.

Strangely though the one Samsung sd card I have seems to last much longer without the date going wrong.

Why are you asking?

Your opinion about chips was pretty clear ...

Never tried to drive so slow full tank ;) but checked yesterday and according to MFD for the last ~1500 miles - ~37 mpg - then checked Fuelio and it returns ~35 mpg - so the difference is ~5.5%
