Which fuse to plug a dashcam?

Featured Replies

I am going to buy a piggy back type connector for a USB power for my dashcam (rather than plug it into the lighter socket)

What fuse could I use? I dont see any which are off when the keys are not in the ignition (to avoid killing the battery).  Obviously, it should not be a critical fuse as adding an additional 1A load might blow it.

Or is there a fuse which is not currently use (not connected) I could use instead?

Its a 2l TDI estate, with auto headlights, bolero, dual fog lamps etc.  No heated seats or sunroof.

I see there is a fuse for the rear lighter socket (which I am not sure I have), this might work except the sockets seem to be on all the time, even if you take the key out of the ignition?  Not sure if the sockets go off when the car locks itself.

Also, what type of fuses does the MKII use?  I see there are at least 6 different physical sizes.  I was thinking of getting something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/SODIAL-Hard-Wire-Dash-Camera/dp/B073Z6HP97/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1514795396&sr=8-12&keywords=dash+cam+fuse+kit but dont know if the piggy back fuse will fit.

Any suggestions?

Personally, I'd just pull out the fuseboard and wire it striaght into a spare ignition live connection so it has it's own individual fuse! It's what I did with my USB chargers and it was pretty simple. Multimeter & a bit of careful common sense.

i used the rear wiper fuse.

A search of the forum would have brought up this.
