Brake overhaul

Featured Replies

Front brakes all replaced new pads and discs... Straight forward enough.

The rear was a different story.

As the pictures show how bad the old lot were and these according to service history were changed 2 yr ago

I beg to differ

Yes indeed

for next time don't put copper grease on the hub spindle...use a yellow/clear bearing grease....as will cope with higher rpm than the copper grease which is not a lubricant per se....just a anti seize compound...it surfaces are not moving but static to each other...

I wiped that off after the photo was taken and did apply the grease as you suggested, just can't believe the service history that came with this car claiming rear was all done 2 yr ago I feel a name and shame coming on ..

At least i know all brakes front and back are new done by myself and saving a few quid.

Good man...I have numerous greases which cover all situations on a car...

Whoever did those rears even two years ago ..all the retaining springs have fallen out ..did they not lock them in with the turn cap/plates??...

I only paid £400 last September the history to it was amazing till you start to investigate and find the real truth , the poor old chap who owned it before was such a nice chap he  gave me a tenner back for diesel home and to think how these garages can do this to people is shocking to say the least

Still same bumper good polish job its all square as i had it checked over think the previous owner caught the drive gate post when moving the car one morning , maybe a heavy breakfast of the liquid type lol. Apart from the wing crease its pretty good nick for the age

Have to admit I was proud of my rear brakes when I re newed them. All shiny with new drums. Did the front as well stops way better now. Problem is I've got alloys so the drums are a little rusted and show through brown. Going to de rust and paint this week end if the weather is ok.

You've reminded me to get on and paint the non-green rear calliper i replaced not long ago! Need to paint both me thinks otherwise shades of green wont match

Since it's not possible to see both calipers at the same time without some kind of elaborate system of mirrors or HD CCTV a perfect match is hardly essential. A frightening insight into the state of your mental wiring, consider getting some help :D

Hadn’t thought of that. Might do the one side red then and the other green

Colour blind people might get confused with which side was which and crash into you though

Add some matching coloured LEDs to each to maintain the individuality after dark.

Edit: and make sure it's the left/port one that's red and the right/starboard one that's green, unless you want to upset (aero)nautical types.

There are six plastic 'glide pads' on each side which simply push into the backplate. The brake shoes slide on them. Yours look a bit knackered. Part number 6N0609589

I can't spell lol

  • 3 weeks later...

Exactly 2 years ago replaced rear brakes on my Furby- TRW drums and pads (full kit with cylinders, springs, wedges, pull-back plates). + New brake cables.

Now handbrake starts to stick on one side (but am using it often).

99% that damn pin (pad<>cable's lever) is rusted again- despite, I sprayed it with ceramic grease before mounting.

So, in next days will try to drop a photo of mine "2 years old brakes" :-/

Question remains open- "to grease on not to grease" :-) that pin.

And if "to grease"- than with what?...

You mean the handbrake arm pivot?....

I just put a drop of oil on mine when I fitted my shoes.
