Not exactly a  rapturous  review for the car - each to their own as always.

9000 miles on mine now, hardly a drop of oil used and returning, on average early 50s mpg    , up for service shortly and puts a smile on my face every time I drive it and for relatively little financial outlay in todays terms.

Pretty much does what it says on the tin. Fun on A,B , C and City roads. Oh ! 200 mile round trip to London (mainly M4) , in acceptable comfort , 15 minutes slower each way ( pretty much same traffic conditions and same time of day)   , to the same destination as my Golf R 's,  for half the money .

I have to say I agree with almost everything he says and did so in a previous post

1 the interior isn't special enough

2 the fun factor for the Citigo (Monte Carlo) is probably 9 out of 10 for what you get from the GTI for much less

3 the GTI is a better car in almost all respects it just doesn't seem a sum of all the parts in the way the Monte does.

Don't get me wrong I really like my GTI , it's  just you don't forgive its short comings quite so easily because it costs that much more.

Come on Skoda give us a turbo charged version of the Monte.

One more thing - all that guff about the GTI being a spiritual successor to the original GTI is garbage. IMO it's much more credible reinvention of the original Mini Cooper than the current bloated BMW Minis on offer.

Anyone who had an original Mini cooper will "get" the GTI

  • They look fun   but £13k for a tiny car is abit much for me.    Theyll be good on the used market in a year or so imo.

  • There will be plenty to choose from if VW keep on producing them. 1 careful more mature driver, or dealership / media car and one private owner.

VW really need to get 'Automatic / 2 pedal' UP!MiiCitigo with WLTP Approval / RDE out on sale,

and the Updated models with better than a ASG box on the go.

& get the Hybrid models into production as there really is the need for small VW, Skoda, Audi, SEAT Automatics.

Some models an ickle bit smaller than this great car from Audi,

or the Polo, Fabia, Ibiza,  going to the Sporting Heritage and Motorsport Success of Skoda with Small Cars.

So will the new S1 Promised have manual & DSG on offer when it arrives and not ludicrously overpriced as previous model. Good low mileage used S1s still at silly money. Would have possibly had one except that I was able to get Golf R at similar money at the time and was a far superior car for the money.

So Std Citigo monte 5dr plus  basic options compared to std UPGTi 5dr is approximately £1500 differential.

So 10% higher in price, for 55PS power 90% more uumph, better equipped alloys / tyre, suspension and handling tweaks, 6speed manual box imo Fun factor

Completely justifies the higher outlay imo.

Having owned a Golf GTi mk1,Mini Cooper and Cooper S 998cc & 1275cc ,I can related all three compared to my pretty much std. UpGTi.

One mod option I would have on the UP would be my missus's Polo Gti bucket seats, not sure if they would fit.

I’ve ordered one. Ever option bar the Black roof on a Silver 5 door. March 2019 I’ve been quoted for delivery

b64d0e39a7b94318bee9889cb974f450.jpgMy favourite as well Tim1631.

I’ll take the delivery with a pinch of salt though.

Already looking at mods. Milltek have got their road + exhaust for it aswell as remaps from several companies too

I may swap the boot for a Citigo one. Not keen on the full glass lid

Well just did 200 mile round trip to Southampton on Saturday to watch footie with one of my sons (he is a Toon fan, then Sunday  did 200plus miles round trip to South London Selhurst Park to see Crystal Palace v Arsenal with my Daughter. So footied out this  Monday morning.

However, me and my kids suffered from no discomfort in the GTI standard seats, that's potholed country roads A &B and city South Circular and bulk M4 Swindon to Chiswick junction.

UP GTi performed brilliantly, brisk average speed of 52 mpg returning average of 56 mpg.

Tim1631 no problem with my glass boot lid, as on this Red current car looks great imo.

So 9500 mile covered , negligible engine oil consumed and it's 1st VW service due next week.

As you can imagine can't speak to highly about this little fun package.

For the record my ex-wife has a 12 plate UP mid spec manual, now covered 105000 mile ,engine never missed a beat and just normal wear and tare parts and Full VW service history. She is only just considering changing for a replacement new car and yes if the deal is right it will be a 5 dr UP as apposed to her current 3 dr.

Kia has better seats. The GTI ones are just re trimmed bogo seats. A real let down. As are the headlights. Should have LED option.

I'm sure the aftermarket will satisfy your considered shortfalls of the car, at reasonable cost soon.

Not sure if the Polo GTi 1.8 seat will fit on the same runners , width doesn't seem much different ,haven't got around to checking my missus's Polo GTI front seat yet.

Quiet honestly  having covered nearly 10,000 miles over the last 9 months , on a whole mixture of drives ,in my experience not a major issue for my ownership and daily driving comfort .

I know they are ok, however myself and a few on the UP! Forum feel as though VW should of put better seats in the car in the first place.

Maybe not the best place too show off its best attributes.

Good competition imo.

I’ve swapped mine. VW could of done more. The seats, headlights and the fact the switches don’t even light up!

Ive gone fir a SEAT Ibiza FR sport. Same engine as the GTI but with DSG. It’s so much better interior is a lot better.

Pays your money and takes your choice I guess . New Seat Ibiza FR Sport with 7 Speed DSG @ £19000 without any discount applied, that's about £4k up on the Up GTi and you obviously wanted the DSG. handy a direct comparison imo

Think the Suzuki Swift Sport is better value than the Seat.

Under £16,000 will get you a new Ibiza FR Sport 1.0 TSI 115ps DSG.    Seat RRP's are to be taken with a pinch of salt.
