Fuel range

Featured Replies

As a new owner of a 2014 2.0 tdi 150bhp Octavia I am curious as to what kind of mileage other users get from their cars.

im only on my second full fill and have gotten approx 300 miles from the first half of the tank, my first tankful only returned 510 miles.

i know there is a lot of variables in play but just trying to get an idea having come from a 2009 A3 1.9tdi which was returning 650 miles to a tank

It’s a small tank used in the Octy 3. My vRS 184 TDi DSG has returned an average tank mileage of 480 per tank. I suspect the DSG box has a lot to do with that.

Usually 380-400. VRS petrol. As above, tank isn't the biggest.

That's pretty good. vRS Petrol here too, but averaging 300 miles to a tank.

I don’t feel too bad so after that. I know the tank is supposedly a little smaller than many others but still a bit frustrating. I suppose it’s reading itself at 53.2 mpg isn’t bad if true????

I do about 50 miles a day; mostly motorway or A roads so always warmed up and little stop/start.

@Happydays I'd be happy with 50+ if I had the diesel, and unhappy if I had less. My trip computer reading is always very close (within 0.5mpg) compared to a manual brim calculation. Not all might have this level of accuracy though.

This last week having been running on Costco diesel for the last few weeks, my 2015 1.6 Octavia estate DSG has returned 482 miles to a full tank, @ £52 at the pump. According to the display, I had another 30 ish miles to empty.

Previously I was using Morrison's fuel, but only getting 430 miles, fill to fill. So I'm much happier now because the Costco diesel is generally 5p/litre cheaper.

I commute about 40miles each way to work, up hill and down dale over the Peak District, this is all on A and B roads, no motorway driving, so I'm quite happy with this return.

The tank size of all FWD drive Octavia is a nominal 50 Litres as yours would be. The 4WD versions are a nominal 55 Litres.

As broad generalisation VW group fuel tanks tend to be able to take up to 5 litres more than claimed, but not something to rely on.

There were a lot of early complaints from early diesel users that the fuel gauge and low fuel warnings were coming on prematurely and that they could only get 40-ish litres in. Have not heard that issue being raised recently though.

The fuel gauge of most cars from most manufacturers tend to be 'optimistic' when showing half full, for instance when my petrol gauge is showing half full and I refill then I usually get 30 litres in, not the 25 litres that you would expect. Easy thing to confirm individually though.

I've always found the distance on a tank claims fairly arbitrary unless there is additional information about refill quantity.

best I have gotten from a tank is 1001km, took just over 54l of fuel.

this is in a VRS TDI

As a rule of thumb, I get roughly 420-430 miles per tank from a 1.4 TSi SE DSG hatch. Usually a fair bit of urban chuntering in that.

I used to get 500 - 550 out of a tank in my old Mk2 vRS diesel DSG.

now i'm lucky if i'm getting 300 out of the 245 :D

Here's my data on my 2.0 TDI 150BHP:

Miles Litres MPG Unit price Cost
420 35.58 53.66 £1.21 £43.02
460 38.61 54.16 £1.19 £45.83
439 36.82 54.20 £1.20 £44.15
459 38.25 54.55 £1.15 £43.95
458 40.31 51.65 £1.14 £45.91
327 28.87 51.49 £1.14 £32.88
478 41.96 51.79 £1.17 £49.05
317 31.05 46.41 (MOT) £1.09 £33.78
489 43.01 51.69 £1.13 £48.56
447 38.27 53.12 £1.13 £43.21
488 42.58 52.10 £1.12 £47.56
429 35.93 54.28 £1.14 £40.93
439 37.07 53.84 £1.12 £41.48
470 41.79 51.13 £1.12 £46.76
515 43.00 54.45 £1.13 £48.54
434 38.24 51.60 £1.14 £43.56
427 34.98 55.50 £1.15 £40.19

I think my car suffers from early warning light problem mentioned. It's not a big deal, just annoying I can only fit around 40 litres into it.

But considering I drive the EV most of the time and I haven't fuelled up for a month now, there's still half left, more often fuel up is better to have less contaminate/condensation in the bottom of the tank.

We get about 300-320 miles out of the 245 tank, usually short-medium journeys though.

I average around 800-900km from a tank in the TDI & have come just short of the 1000km mark on some occaisons.

Fuelly says the long term recorded average is 51mpg with the best being 59mpg.

As GerryCan mentioned the problem with the Octavia is the distance to empty seems quite inaccurate if your driving style is not constant.

Some times a refill will only take 42-44L others you can get around 50.

At least this way round is better than our new XC90 which stopped due to lack of fuel with 20km to empty on the display.

That'd be it then as mine's often in stop-start urban traffic.  Did a 175 mile round trip today though, normal driving, and averaged 39.2mpg, which is way up on my Fuelly long term (below).  Would have probably been over 40mpg, but I had a minor transgression due to fools (the like of which I cannot suffer), who seem unable to keep up a steady pace on the M-way and annoyed my cruise control :wondering:

Best I have every managed have both been motorway trips and getting 69mpg out of a 150BHP 2.0TDI manual. Has happened twice and calculated brim to brim, both on trips to Edinburgh in the summer months up the M5/M6 in free flowing traffic with cruise control on 70mph, 8-9 hour straight run, managed around 650-700 miles before I gave in and refueled because of the fuel gauge on the return trip.

My local trips though, this time of year 50-55mpg call it about 450-500 miles from a brimmed tank before the cars fuel warning light starts begging me to pull over.

I do love the economy.

Mine is 10 miles from house to motorway, then 45 miles more to work. Then home again. I try and leave it on cruise control set at 70 while on the motorway

That sound like decent return on that in fairness

Some decent returns done there though. Do you keep the records yourself or using an app

Well done on that run, sounds like a fair old slog. Bit like Clarksons run before on top gear in the Audi

This is export from Fuelly app/website. I use their app for data entry, website to download and see the data. I am using Fuelly to track EVERYTHING, it can also track servicing/MOT costs. Only thing I'm not using it to track is car washes. :D

Those miles are done over my commute (20min 4 miles local stop/start road + 26 miles motorway using ACC each way) or more distant driving on motorway/A roads for an hour or so during weekend trips. You can see the point I started driving EV, where the last few MPG went up to 54 due to driving the Skoda longer trips, zero local trips. I hope to get close to 60mpg during summer.

Thanks for that info, must check out the app.

just completed my second full to the brim tank which returned 523 miles with approx 80% motorway driving.

Although I know the mpg return is not bad, it really is a shame the tank was not a little larger.

But how many litres??

Not sure on the liters to be honest. Dash display was saying 30 miles range left before I filled to the brim again

44.8 mpg/515 miles per tank consistently @ 236bhp vRS TDI with the crdt3+ unit on 2+1
