Rear window getting dirty

Featured Replies

Don't know of anyone charged with having a dirty rear window.

CUR reg 30 refers to 'view to the front' but does state 'all glass'. Any case law on the matter?

  • What a stupid comment!

  • Don't you just love a bloke who signed up with the forum just a couple of weeks ago and is already quoting chapter and verse and putting people straight about on just about everything there is to know

  • Lost the will 3 or 4 pages back .... cant believe that using the supplied wash/wipe mechanism with water/screenwash can generate such volume of dialogue/drivel, its a flat vertical back car, live with

But if you get caught it's £60 and 3 points.  Unless you are involved in an accident, when serious charges could be pressed.  Anyway, I like to see what's behind me and it's much easier to use one, rear-view mirror than to keep glancing at both wing mirrors.

Can you state and evidence that this has ever happened?

Why is it different to a van/ lorry or an ambulance response car chock full of kit?

Any rearward collision is the fault of the rearward driver.

1 I don't know where you could find that info.  But police did prosecute drivers with tinted windows in November

2 Because that's the way the law is written!

3 Not always true.  If you break down on the side of a clearway/motorway and don't post a warning triangle for instance.  Or if you are reversing!

So there isn't any precedent for prosecution for a dirty window?

1 tinted front windows

2 agree

3 no obligation for triangles in U.K. Law

What offences do your acquaintances normally get charged with?

I think theres a big case at the old bailey next week, motorist found with dirty rear screen. the judge is try to look into it so the culprit better look out.

If you must be able to see out of the rear window how does that apply to car derived vans where the back window is painted out with the company details.
Or when carrying a load in the back obscuring the rear window in a car or van or towing a caravan etc.
As long as the door mirrors are letting you see what's behind I'm sure that would be OK.

I can't find any info on whether or not anyone has been prosecuted because,

  1. The ONS does not collect such data.
  2. It would be dealt with by a fixed penalty notice
  3. it won't be reported in local newspapers

For interest I looked up the wording in the The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986

It says, "All glass or other transparent material fitted to a motor vehicle shall be maintained in such condition that it does not obscure the vision of the driver while the vehicle is being driven on a road. "

So, it is the glass itself that has to be clear, not the view of the window.  So filling your estate car to the brim such that you can't see out of the rear window would not be a problem.

Also, I read that all cars built after 2010 must have two wing mirrors and a rear view mirror unless the rear view mirror could not provide a view.

Good question!  I think the doors are solid ie, the hole for the window(s) is not punched out - it is just the same shape.

kelper, what area of the Scottish highlands are you at?

I've bought a house in Bettyhill, Fisgary.  But I have not moved yet.

Getting to and from Bettyhill certainly means a lots of driving through the Highlands.

Have fun.

So where do you live/work?  I drove thousands of miles in January, based in Sallachy, Dornie and got to drive my Yeti on snowy hills and descents.  It was brill but I need better tyres!

I am in Forfar and back and fore to the South West as well as up and down to the Moray Firth quite a bit.

I used to spend time around Shieldaig quite a lot but not been up in recent years to spend any time.

Up and round the North Coast 500 a few times though.

Michelin CrossClimate+ should be fine.

They came 14th in Autobild's 2017 winter tyre test!

Google translate does a good job on this German page but there is a summary in English here.

This topic seems to have diverged from the original "dirty window" query and is in risk of descending into a slanging match.  Come on guys put your egos back in the box.

Any vehicle with a vertical rear window will get dirty, live with it!

I started the topic and am quite happy with some heated debate.  If you would like to be a moderator why don't you ask the forum owner?

I'm sure we'll get a warning if any bounds are crossed!  Mind you, I only asked if mudflaps would help!

Your reply confirms my opinion. You have my sympathy. My wife has just read your postings and her response was "get a life".

Don't bother replying to this message as I've added you to my Ignore list. Goodbye.

I think she meant you!  No one makes you read this thread.

Haven't seen any slanging. A bit of messdeck lawyering and some genuine questions/discussion.

I'd have the same conversation with the copper who pulls me for a winter window!

If there were no rear windows (and doors) getting dirty, where would our street artists exhibit their work?

"I wish my wife was this dirty. She is when you're not at home"

"I wish my girlfriend was this dirty. Funny, she is with me"

(I'll fetch my bucket and sponge)
