DSG Jerk when placed in Reverse

Featured Replies

Hi all

Had a quiet few months with my Superb combi 170 DSG 2011.

However a couple of times in the last few days I noticed when placing car in reverse it kind of jerks back. The journeys are long motorway with some stop start traffic at the end am or pm.

My worst fear is the DSG. It's really bothering me now. Decided to use the Octy 2 today.

The history suggests DSG oil change at 70k, non franchise as all servicing was,  which was perhaps around 2015/16 just before I got the car.

Car always feels fine changing gears but I do think they are not smooth changes sometimes. It's my first DSG ever and have read some issues are down to how the owner drives. In traffic or slow speeds you can feel it changing. Again not sure what's normal.

But twice now I felt the reverse issue so I am concerned.

The only thing I have still not seen to is the DSG stat change so the temperature needle is all over the place still. Sometimes zero rarely shows 90. I did spot that issue last year and I have done about 10k since.

Car is curenntly on 101k

Any ideas, I really do love this car, can do without a problem given how much I invested in the EGR and Turbo last year.?

There were some people who had the oil changed and it smoothed things out.

I did try last week or week before the ignition off/on DSG reset procedure, not convinced it made any difference as I wanted to see if the change up too early could be changed in Drive mode.

Thanks in advance.

The DSG stat change is a very cheap repair and can be done by yourself this will not let the DSG box work at its optimum temperature.

And driving 10K since you noticed it is asking for trouble:crying:.

Get the stat changed and  also service the DSG and get it reset with VCDS and I am sure you will find a complete transformationB) .

It's too costly a unit to not look after it...

Yeah realised I ordered the part from Autodoc in Aug. 1 thing after another and too scared to get to it. Before you know it it's Xmas and too cold. I am a high miles 95x2 a day pretty much all motorway. Hope it had an easy life in that case. I will maybe have to get someone to do the stat, oil and filter and VCDS work now.

It's dead easy if you have the correct tools    £9 delivered

And once you remove air box its right there

Thanks you sir. I have seen pictures of the area on threads.  What is that tool though. Is it like a brake pipe clamp?  To prevent fluid loss ?

i take it you only need to clamp one end as that's where all the engine fluid would leak out ?

I have a brake pipe clamp which squeezes a brake pipe together is that suitable too ?

My colleague said my forwards gear change feel is normal on the basis you can even feel a gear change in a merc c250.

Its the rear jump that's my issue I hope only now as that's new.

It will most likely just need reset to standard with VCDS and the tool is to remove the metal clips that hold the pipe on .

Use the tool to slide the clips back on the 2 hoses that connect to the thermostat then twist and pull to release the Therm  from the pipe.

You don't need to clamp the pipes if you do it quick enough ;). Then use tool to refit clamps in original position...Job Done

The DSG is always jerky when cold, but if it's jerky when hot it needs to be taken note of. As already pointed out, you need to fix the broken thermostat before anything else since that's a problem you know you have.

At 70000 miles, it should have been near its second DSG fluid change: the schedule is fluid change every 60000 km/40000 miles. Given that you've had the last 10000 miles with a dodgy thermostat it's likely that the fluid may be past its best now and is worth changing. If you take it to an indy, make sure they know what they're doing with the DSG.

The DSG reset procedure is here: http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/6-Speed_Direct_Shift_Gearbox_(DSG/02E)

I carried it out sitting in a layby off the motorway so that I could drive straight out after it to do the defined test drive procedure. I'm not sure how much difference it made but it can't hurt to do it anyway.

My paperwork shows it's done at 30 and 70k by the same owners friends garage, who did all the work.

I wonder if because the temp needle says it's cold still that the box is indeed cold?

I have asked Unit18@ MK they are tried and trusted on here I believe

Thanks for the link for the reset too.

Any gearbox will get warm/hot during use since the fluid is being churned up by the gears as they turn.

In a manual for most applications there's no need to cool the fluid: it's designed to operate over a range of temperatures and it just has to lubricate the gears.

In the (6-speed wet-clutch) DSG however, it's also working to keep the clutch at its best and temperature control is much more critical. When the thermostat is not working, the risk is of the transmission fluid over-heating, since the thermostat opens to circulate the fluid through the cooler. For that reason you should change the fluid once you change the thermostat: if you're having trouble finding the time to do the stat yourself, I'd just hand it in to the garage and have them do the stat and fluid change together.

I have been looking through the paperwork a few times. Car was as mentioned serviced by a friends garage of the previous owner. I was very adamant to check stuff had been done at the right time. So DSG oil and filter approx 45k 2/2015 after he bought from main dealer who clearly missed it at 41k themselves. I have an invoice for this but nothing in the book.

However later in May 16 serviced again at 70k a few ticks in book. including the DSG change no mention on the receipt about the DSG and if I was being anal would say the tick is not the same style in the book either.

I called the garage who do not keep any records at all.

I am now of the opinion it has not been done since 45k.

I am also waiting on Unit18 so I can indeed rule this out by getting it changed for more reasons than the above issue now.

Just out of interest how do you know you have a DSG thermostat problem?

Plenty of threads on here. Main thing temperature needle has mind of its own. Reading cold when actually hot.

Update which may be the actual cause. I tried it in reverse a few times local 2 miles trip. Nothing smooth as usual.

On way home it slipped the clutch when pulling away from standstill and grabs it back immediately. So loss off drive. Tested on a hill stop start stop start. Did it again. Clutch slip. Release brake rolls then slips and takes up drive itself after rolling back.

Then found a bigger hill. This time it stalled with EML glow plug light.

I have this on VCDS.

p0192 short to ground g247 fuel pressure sensor. So is the cutting out of power because of fuel starvation on the DSG?

Maybe, maybe not. You know the DSG thermostat is bad, so fix that first, then worry about the fuel pressure sensor.

AA are coming out hopefully tonight for this. So you reckon not related to clutch slip, almost like fuel starvation because it eventually stalled, having done it 4-5 times when I tried to force it on a hill stop start ?

I'm saying fix the thing you know is wrong with your transmission before looking for more problems.

Ok I get it, plan to get the thermo done today. Let's see how it goes. I spent half an hour trying to reproduce issue it's gone too.

Thanks for that, so the dashboard temp gauge indicates this issue. That's interesting, thought that only indicated engine coolant temp.

DSG Thermo replaced today with help and guidance of a garage although I did all the work myself.

Took the pipe off from the cooler clip and where it clips/joins to the T near the front of the engine. Dismantled on floor and replaced thermostat with Mahle one from Autodoc.

Let engine idle and fast idle 1500rpm until needle at 90 with cap off and also engine oil temp about 90 too. Fans never cut in. So put expansion cap on and did some local trips without issues. Will check fluid level once cooled and top up. Maybe lost half a litre of coolant tops. Not showing yet.

The part is quite cheap from memory including shipping only vs say UK prices.

As long as you can wait for delivery. Again not too long.
