Under the bonnet

Featured Replies

So, taken a first look under the bonnet and, as expected the washer bottle had plain water in it. So much for a PDI, sending out a car in the middle of winter with just water in the bottle is both cheap skate and asking for trouble. Syphoned off and replaced with washer fluid. Second thing (1st really) on the numerous Karoq pics and Youtube vids I'd seen was that they had gas struts like our Q3 rather than a metal rod - perhaps a mod for the future as the I think the holes for gas struts are there. The daft thing is, whoever designed the key hole shaped slot in the bonnet to accept the rod has put it upside down insomuch that the smaller part of the hole is a the bottom? You need to have a look to see what I'm getting at.

Still chuffed with it and still reading the manual....

Do you mean a brand new car was handed over with h2o in the washer bottle.   I would be right onto the dealer principal by phone and an email,  and copied to skoda,  and the dealership could sent out a technician to collect the car. Or take out the water and fill with the over priced VW tears of a unicorn fluid they say fan washers require.    ? What were the tyre pressures set at?   Did you check the set the TPMS?  And did you look at the oil level as the car was handed over?

I haven't seen any views which show gas struts for the bonnet of the Karoq.  Kodiaq, yes, but not Karoq, which (little thing I know) I was hoping would have gas struts.  Just another indication of a quality if a car has gas struts for the bonnet.

And yes, I too have noticed the bonnet stay hole is the wrong way round.  Doh!

Yep, it was probably me getting it wrong about the gas struts. That's what happens after watching and researching dozens of Karoq Youtube videos into the wee small hours, the Karoq vids blend into the Kodiaq vids:blink:

It's the same on our Citigo! Cannot work out why they did it, but it is daft. My bet is that the intern tasked with adding the little part for bonnet stays to the CAD systems put it in wrong way up.

We need a name! For were there’s a name, there’s a claim - for the first person who gets poleaxed when the bonnet comes crashing down on his/her head when the wind catches it and it lets go!

Not really - more likely a recall to pop rivet a patch over it, the right way up!

And why didn't the manufacturers testing and signing off pick this up! I'm flabbergasted.

I'm sure my Qashqai is this way up too.

I think its in case the wind catches it then the end of the metal rod will get caught in the slot.

It probably is safer if you think about it.

The last VRS Octy from the dealer i had didt have gas struts either.

My Superb II has the gas struts...but I looked a right tit before I realised that.  I was checking the car out at the dealers and kept trying to hold it up while I ducked around trying to find the metal rod....

As per above. It’s to prevent the bonnet blowing backward onto the windscreen.

erm, okay extreme weather precaution ? if there is tornado or storm in place you should not open bonnet anyway

You don’t have to be in the middle of a storm or tornado for a gust of wind to just whip the bonnet back.

Isn’t the small hole at the bottom so if the wind gusts and pushes  the bonnet up the rod will slide in to the narrow slot

I guess there’s two ways of looking at it, although if you lift the bonnet up without holding the rod it’s just too slack a fit. I’ve never seen a keyhole slot that way up on any previous cars I’ve had. Having said that, TheRoq’s excellent find, with the gas strut conversion kit could well be on the ‘to do’ list.

I must remember to warn my chauffeur to keep his cap on when checking the oil and water in case the bonnet falls on his head.

:D Not where I live!!!

I've just sacked the chauffeur for getting above his station. He's put the  chambermaid in the family way, and as any gentleman knows, that's his or his eldest sons job. And to think, I was concerned that the Karoq bonnet would fall on his head!
