1.9 tdi pd 105 chirping ticking noise

Featured Replies

hi all. not had my octavia very long and I was impressed to start with but now I'm starting to find faults with her. i had a full service done last week and got told everything was fine and a solid car. i was driving home last night and just opened window to get some fresh air when I noticed this chirping/ticking noise. i can hear it a little on tickover but gets worse as I accelerate after 2500 rpm it seems to quieten down. i was thinking it was a pulley on serpentine belt but i have doubts and now im worried I bought a dog of a car. it's a 57 plate with the 1.9 tdi pd engine and the car only cost me 2000 with full service history. cam belt and water pump changed at 90000. car is currently on 115000. i managed to place a camera in battery box to record the sound. any advice be great. just hope it's something simple. thanks all. video link is below

Dribble a small amount of water slowly on the auxiliary belt with the engine running, chances are it's just a squeaky belt and it should go almost immediately once it gets wet.

Long term fix is a thorough cleaning of the belt with a hot water/detergent mix and good rinse.

Although I would say it's more like a post turbo whistle, check for exhaust leaks.

hi micmac that is for the advice. could you hear like that ticking though could that still be the belt. the car has plenty of power and starts fine with no lights on dash. i was just concerned about it being something more bigger like the camshaft or injector. i don't know if this engine suffered with the cam as it's a bxe engine. how can I check for exhaust leaks. thanks

belt or idler pulley   @10 years it maybe the original belt and whist removing etc it  is not worth putting back,  I would replace (unless you know it's history) and check the pulley while it's off,   the pulley can be re lubed (with some effort) to save the cost of a complete tensioner  unit

are these common for this sort of problem. i have tried listening at idle and the squeak seems from that area but if I open passenger window and go past a wall I can hear it clearly but it must be how the noise travels and so I can hear it so I was worried it was coming from passenger side but on idle can't hear the squeak in that area.

I think you are perhaps mistaking the nature of the beast for actual problems.

The PD engine is pretty unrefined and agricultural sounding.

If you can jack the car up or drive up a high kerb on the right side and secure, get somebody to operate the accelerator pedal whilst you listen underneath for leaks .

The turbo is on the rear/underside/right of engine, a short length of garden hose held to your ear and the other end probed to find the source of sound is a useful tool.

i was told that these engines are pretty solid and reliable as taxi drivers love them. thing is I suffer with terrible anxiety and ocd especially with cars and when I read the horror stories about injectors camshaft and dmf noises I automatically think my car has that problem. gets to a point where I get too frightened to drive as it may breakdown. so does it sound pretty normal to you. thanks again for advice

here's a video I've done this evening of the car. she is a bit noisy as I've not used her at all today. i have it a rev and the chirping is there a little but it seems worse under load when driving. i put the camera to the exhaust as I've heard that's another way of checking the cam you can hear it from there but I heard nothing untoward. let me know what you think anyone.

I would run it with the Aux belt off and see if it does it.

Car sounds pretty normal for an Octavia PD. I own one. But never heard what it sounds like in the engine bay. Mine is on 227k. Most reliable car I have owned.
