undertaking

Featured Replies

Just by way of explanation, I'm talking about overtaking in the "wrong" (ie inside) lane of a dual carriageway / motorway when using ACC. I thought I'd read somewhere that the car doesn't do this, but mine will happily undertake. It happens at all speeds, from traffic jam crawl (which I would expect) to full motorway speed. What are others' experiences?

My experience is that it will only undertake if it's following another car that does the undertake first.

My Superb (16 plate) wont undertake above 50mph in the UK but would when in Europe:blink:

Mine will slow and try to keep the preset distance. I usually get a Karoq/SUV image showing in the DCC view.

Pressing on on the accelerator will override this.

Q102,  tell it firmly that the UK is both in Europe and the EU.

It can become awkward next March but not before, go all Continental and make its own decisions when not in Continental Europe or the EU.

And if that doesn't work...

Sorry - couldn't resist:D.

@Penguin - when you say it tries to maintain the preset distance, do you mean from the car in front or the car in the outside lane? Mine will keep preset distance from the car in front, but ignores the car in the outside lane if it is going slower than I am.

I believe it's the car on the outside.  e.g I've joined a 3 lane motorway and then come upon Mrs Elane Hogger and rather than go across 2 lanes I just carry on up the inside lane.  The car defo detects the presence of the car in the middle lane and slows. I know it's the car in the middle lane as you get the SUV picture on the screen and not the Octavia one, which you get when the car is in front of you.

Well you learn something every day! Cheers Penguin - I had absolutely no idea the symbols are different depending on what the car is watching. I do remember vaguely on a couple of occasions thinking the symbol looked somehow different but never gave it any more thought. Must pay more attention in future. Interestingly, it would indicate that the car is sensing the car in the next lane over (if I did indeed see an SUV image), but at least I have something now to be able to tell more definitively. Thanks again.

That's because the car knows where it is, thats how your headlights automatically switch to travel mode as soon as you drive off the ferry or shuttle :)

No, mine doesn't. It won't automatically change and I have Bi-Xenon lights.

Automatic/GPS change is greyed out in menu

I can only say that mine does and has done from out of the box.

You have a pre-Brexit model though.

Thanks for all the replies on this. No wonder my recollection was vague - this is what the manual says:

image.png.bf72b89c54d8f9bb77202077dbe86034.png

A barely noticeable paragraph tucked away at the bottom of the right hand side. Note it says it "may" work, and it "could" happen from "about" 80km/hr. Not exactly definitive!

One bit of info there that might help though - @Q102 notes it doesn't work abroad. According to the manual it's not supposed to. It says it is activated "when your vehicle is moving faster than the vehicle in the adjacent lane on the driver's side". Which is all the time if driving on the wrong side of the road. If you see what I mean...

Finally, it says "The display shows the detected vehicle is in the adjacent lane", then helpfully (not!) doesn't show a picture of what it actually looks like. I'm guessing this is the change of maxidot image from saloon to SUV that Penguin mentions above.

Jeff when the SUV icon appears it actually shows it on the right hand side of the lane markers, clearly showing it's in the outside lane of your current position.  So where the number '1' box is on the diagram is where you'd see the vehicle icon.  Hope that makes sense.

It works in Sweden though we drive on the "wrong side" :)

In the display it shows a car in the left lane but a gentle touch on the throttle will make it ignore the sleeper in the middle lane.

Thanks @Baverhanne. But don't you have a left-hand drive car for driving in Sweden? If you brought it to the UK it would then be on the "wrong side" and the undertake assist (made up feature name) wouldn't work:). Next time it happens to me I will take more notice of what is going on in the maxi-dot.

SUV? My Superb only display white Octavia hatches no matter what.

My my16 would not let me undertake in Belgium. I didn't know the lights were supposed to change automatically, so I did it manually whilst waiting for the train to depart Folkestone. I also changed the speedo from mph to kph and the cruise control and TSR worked flawlessly.

I've been caught out a couple times when a car takes an off ramp and the ACC brakes the car, but have learned to anticipate that now. It makes reading a book tricky, though.

Undertaking is for Dead folk and Undertaker's

You are overtaking on the inside which is legal in queuing traffic.

Just touch the accelerator when the car slows and away you go. ACC will resume.

Obviously always be more careful when overtaking on the inside because there are people in cars out there :D You know the ones that change lane if the other lane is moving o so slightly more. No indication of course.

I assume when the car is set to right hand traffic it does it the other way round?

Mine slows to match the speed of the car on your right, overridden by touching the accelerator.  Not noticed what it does in Europe (I change lights manually). It is an early 17 car.

It spends a lot of its time on active motorways around Birmingham where you are expected to stay in lane and can overtake on the left when traffic is heavy and lanes are moving at different speeds.  Very useful last night on the M6 where I was the only car using the inside lane (Hard shoulder as running lane).

It can be a bit disconcerting when it slows and there is a car close behind you.

Can anybody else confirm, that a SUV i showing in the MaxiDOT when using ACC? As seen below, I get white Octavia´s (in my brown Superb...)

No, it's a different car.  Defo not the Octavia as I've had instances of both been on the screen at the same time.  Looks more like the previous Tiguan.

That´s weird. I get nothing but white Octavia´s - even then it´s showing a car in the lanes next to the one I´m driving in.
