Rear Seat Release Mechanism Issue

Featured Replies

First post so here goes.

Just got an Octavia VRS estate only had it 10 days and managed to knock the casing for the rear seat quick release when I was loading my windsurfing kit in today. Because it is a bit proud it looks like they are easy to catch when sliding things in with the seats down... lesson learnt.

So the red button, that shows it is released or not, is now stuck inside. Looking at it I thought just a quick push with a screwdriver would release it but it didn't and I ended up making a bit of a mess of it :-(

Anyway I wondered if anyone knew how to get the casing off i.e. where the clips are on the outer casing so i can see the issue. Any ideas or tips welcome. Many thanks.

Hi

I'm having a similar problem with mine they red button that shows if the seat is locked or unlocked is stuck out.

I was just wondering if you managed to resolve your issue.

Thanks

I am having the same issue. The button inconsistently will not fall back in place when the seat is clicked into place. Also there is a rattle from the back seat that seems to be related, as it goes away once the seat is folded down.

Just managed to sort mine with a bit of force I pulled the whole plastic off and refixed it I’ve broken one of the clips but at least the red is no longer showing.

I was hoping Skoda were going to fix it when it went in for some warranty work but they didn't do it. It is back in in the next few weeks so i'll press them on it and hopefully find out how to resolve it as I can see it happening again for me due to the design and using the boot with the seats down a lot.

I am planning to do the same with warranty. Similar situation, I pull the seat down on a regular basis to fit surfboards inside.

I noticed the problem right after delivery, and at the 1k service a few days back they couldn’t fix it and said I needed to bring it back to pull the seat apart.

Bit of dry lubricant is required, my favourite ole school method is candle wax as it doesn't smell or dry out

I’ve had a similar issue like Loftus: the red button was out no matter if seat was locked or unlocked and the rim was off like on the first picture of the original post. I tried to take off the rim by hands but it didn’t budge so I busted out a large screwdriver and wedged it under the corners of the other side of the rim (where the opening handle is) and gave it a nudge. The whole rim just came off fine (broke nothing luckily) and after checking the red button (which was perfectly fine) I just refitted the rim and voila: works as expected now. 🙂 So bottom line: there are two long (4-5 cm) plastic “tongues” with a hole at the end on each side of the latch near the opening handle that just click in place way down that you need to force open, then the whole rim comes off. Hope this helps.

Agreed - the mechanism gets stiff.  I use a dab of Lithium spray to keep all these items working properly.  You should also do your door hinges whilst you are there too.

sorry for bumping this old thread but its what brought me here and the info was a bit sparse so i thought i'd add a little detail for prosperity 🙂

so i noticed this same problem when i had the seats down, the little red tab for the seat release was stuck up and the cover partially popped off, neither could be pressed back down. seat could still lock into place and unlock without any looseness.  i read the posts here that recommended some grease but if felt more like it was locked out of place/caught on something than sliding poorly.

i tried to pry the cover off by hand but it wasnt going anywhere, couldnt see any tabs so i took a screwdriver, stuck it as far down as it would go, hoping it would cross paths with as many tabs as possible (if there were more than one), pried upwards, heard a loud crack went to do the other side but as i pulled the seat up, the tab dropped back into place. wasnt sure if it worked but tried the cover anyway and what do you know, it slotted back in place with no effort at all and the front bit that i pried up clicked back into place. i was going to take it all apart just to see what was getting stuck but it was over and done so quickly (literally 2min with half that trying to use my fingers) i figured id just take the win 😃

from the way the cover was up and couldnt be pushed down, it seems if the seat is down and the cover is knocked off (wouldnt be uncommon if youre sliding in something with a flat bottom and decent weight), part of the mech for the tab gets dislodged and it stays up.  so the key is to lift the cover while the seat is upright and let whatever its stuck on to be freed up.

hope that helps someone 🙂

Thanks to Bufesrac and Susuwatari, I had this exact problem and your solutions worked perfectly!

Hi, had this happen to me recently too, and found an easy way to get the cover off etc - and design that is not exactly true to the ‘Simply Clever’ slogan.

Firstly it’s far too easy for luggage to knock this cover up and out of position, with button stuck permanently up.

Three things happen inside:

1. the hook (A) that holds the back of the cover down has jumped off its catch

2. the back of the cover rises and the peg (B) has jumped up onto a ledge (C), so it can’t be pushed down again

3. this puts forward pressure on the button, making it stiff. But also edges (D + E) catch on each other, which stops the button going down, either when the seat is clicked back into the upright position, or by being directly pressed.

Removing the cover:

Release the two long front clips (F) by pulling the seat foam back on the outer side of the cover (G) to see the bottom of the clip (H), and pull it gently outwards with a hooked tool (mine is an old bike spoke) to jump off its step. Repeat on the other side (with headrest removed), and the cover comes off upwards.

Preventing it happening again:

Before replacing the cover, make two simple design changes. File a chamfer to the bottom of the peg (I) so that it will go past the guide ledge without catching on it. Also, file chamfers onto the edges (D+E) so that they do not catch when the button is pressed down with some forward pressure. (Sorry, forgot to take a photo after filing done).

Replacing the cover:

Offer the cover into the seat vertically. The peg (B) should go past its guide ledge (C) without catching on it. The two front clips will click on, and the back hook (A) will latch when the back of the cover is pressed down into place. Tuck foam in all round as needed. Done.

If luggage knocks the cover up in future, it should just push back again to re-engage the hook (A).

Hope this helps someone.

Huge thank you to SteveH18 - had my Octavia scout busted into and bags removed through window. (Long sad story!) Cleared glass today and noticed the above problem - presumably knocked casing when stealing stuff. Just spent 20mins puzzling problem and now 2mins research to find answer THANK YOU!

Sorry to bump an old thread, but has anyone had this issue with the release handle in the boot that drops the seats not working?

Feels like cable has disconnected, seat still drops using the mechanism on the actual seat itself.

I've got that problem on the left rear seat, on investigating the outer of the bowden cable is no longer clamped in the seat back so I need to work out a way to reclamp it while working in the small space available through the opening in the seat cloth.

Exactly the same side that I’ve got an issue with as well, it does just feel like the cable needs reconnecting.

I've also had this issue, the frame was a bit lifted and couldn't be placed back, after an agonizing hour of trying to lift it, I gave up..... Took a rubber mallet, gave it a whack..... Now it works like a charm.... 😅
