vRS mode in manual diesel-can you notice?

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm hoping to buy a Octavia vRS diesel estate in the next few weeks, probably a 16/17 plate. I'm not too bothered about DSG or a manual box but was wondering if you can really notice the difference in the manual. My other half has a DSG in her Leon FR and you can obviously feel the changes quicken and it'll rev higher,  for longer but I was wondering if you can notice much difference in the diesel manual? Thanks in advance. (and if someone's already answered/asked this elsewhere, I apologise. I'm a forum newbie!)

It should stiffen up the steering at bit and shorten the pedal on acceleration (i.e. I don't know the exact numbers but full throttle is at 60% rather than 100%)  It also changes lighting and aircon settlings.

I use mine is sport mode all the time as I prefer the feel.  Mine is a DSG but I prefer the gearbox in normal mode.

Not sure on diesel, but on my 230 'Sport' mode spools up the engine/+turbo response quicker, and you get significantly less lag. That said, mine has been remapped to Stage 1, so they may have fettled this somewhat...

Cheers guys. I quite fancy the dsg box but trying to find one in a diesel vRS estate in my price range is proving difficult. Hence the question about the manual. Maybe I should just hang on till one pops up.

As others have covered it's basically sharper throttle response, increased fake sound via the sound actuator and a few other minor things.

Only time i really put mine into vRS is when i'm 'prepping' to overtake on a A / B road and want the gearbox to drop down - but i've actually started being less lazy and changing down with the paddles instead (although i then wonder why its not changing up on its own - think i've done too many DSG miles now!).

@Onion8 - if you're a 'manual enthusiast', the VRS has a really nice gearchange (and only gets better with time). However, depending on the daily driving you'll be doing, DSG nowadays has manual beaten in almost every domain - quicker, (often) smoother, no 'clutch foot' in traffic - and other pros. If you deem it better for you, might be worth waiting around / looking across the VAG spectrum.

I now feel like a dirty heretic 'repping DSG > Manual

Cheers ads230. Think I'm going to keep looking out for a dsg rather than plump for the manual.

I have the VRS in Diesel and Manual and i can feel the difference when its in sport mode, noticeably the weighted steering and throttle response. Coming from Honda's  that have an excellent feel changing gear, the manual gearbox in this VRS is as good.

If i was to get another i would also chose the DSG, my motorway journey now has a 30 minute bumper to bumper ball ache on the M20 each day.

In the vRS diesel the pedal mapping in "normal" mode is very aggresive anyway. I'd guess by about 60% travel you are already at 100% torque.

Whilst you might be able to feel a small difference with the manual in "sport mode" is not really necessary because you control the gear & the change in Accelerator pedal is not great.

On a DSG, the main change of "sport mode" is to the gear shifting point & gear selection where it is much useful to be able to select the regime: eco/normal/sport.

The audi throttle mod makes quiet a difference in the pedal feel in my manual vrs tdi.

Yes you can tell in a manual and it's much better than the DSG which just holds the gear forever.

Thanks for the replies. Think I'm going to try and wait for an estate with a dsg box to pop up on Autotrader.

I have a diesel manual with the CRDT3+ and pedal box so i have a diesel with better/sharper performance and more torque than the stock 230 petrol, I've fitted the dog bone insert and this has made the biggest difference, gear change is even better and there is no wheel hop at all on hard acceleration and the pull is amazing. I've driven a stock 230 dsg, to compare i would take the 230 over a stock 184 manual diesel but with some simple mods there's no comparison.

I had a modified diesel VRS and compared to my new petrol it was a waste of money.

No offence to anyone with a diesel but compared to the petrol VRS it is **** in comparison.

Diesel shouldn’t wear a VRS badge IMO

thats ok tim, i understand and respect your point of view but other than making sweeping statements how is it ****? you need to back them up with facts?

I've got comparable if not more power, more torque and much better fuel economy over a stock 230 vRS in my current spec, I buy my diesel in the ROI so its substantially cheaper (-20p/L ave) to fill up from empty, just 4 reasons why i prefer my diesel. And i havent even touched on reliability, why do most taxi drivers run diesels?

Cons? Noise, not a problem (just turn of that daft generator), emissions? well i produce ALOT less CO2 than a petrol, with dpf particulates should be taken care off. All this political clap trap about climate is just leftist libtard climate SJWs and Govts who want another excuse to push fake taxes on us. what are the CO2 figures on a vRS230?

oh look tax is cheaper too!

Engine CO2 emissions Road tax (12 months)
2.0 Tdi Diesel 115 g/km (Min) £30
2.0 Tsi (230bhp) Petrol,  147 g/km (Max) £150

Thanks for everyone's advice and comments. I eventually came across a good deal on a Superb Sportline 190 DSG so went for it. I'm picking it up on Wednesday. Cheers again.
