58reg 1.2 Fabia Wipers not working

Featured Replies

Today after many years of trouble free motoring i found that the wipers gave up on me as i was driving (quite scary).

It is just the front wipers. The wash spray works front and back and the rear wiper works.

The front wiper fuse is ok.

When you put the wiper to fast setting you hear the click under the dash.

I have  checked for power then shorted the bonnet sensor cable out to eliminate that but still no joy.

Any suggestions would be greatly received.

Pop open the bonnet and have a listen as to wether you can hear the motor "Spinning"! Although unlikely to have both wipers fail, a common fault is the drivers-side wiper ball joint popping off the linkage so only the passengers side one runs. That said, if a different ball joint failed, it MAY be possible the passenger side wiper fails and as the driver side one takes its "Power" From that, both would then fail! If the motor is spinning, it will most likely be a fault such as this.

Just a thought, this set-up seems a bit strange for the passenger side to feed the drivers side, making the passenger side more reliable due to less connections but I would think it is this way due to being a European vehicle, hence the wiper for the passenger USUALLY being the wiper for the driver, giving the left hand drive variant the more reliable wiper! (Similar situation to the placement of Euro car bonnet pops, usually being on the left, for the majority of drivers).

Thanks for your input mrgf. There was no sign of any effort being made on the wipers.

I took the car to the garage and they changed the comfort control unit. It was a second hand one from a polo and this has made the wipers work.

Unfortunately i have found problems since. Petrol gauge is not working and the boot will not open.

The RAC man (whilst filling the car with petrol) told me that the module is not programmed to my car.

I will have to get a different module that matches my car or get a garage to do it properly this time.

Yeah, many things need programming. I did have a wiper issue myself a few years back and it was the module becoming corroded. The specialist cleaned up the terminals as best as they could and they have worked fine ever since. They did say though, if it became MORE corroded,  it may be beyond repair and need replacing! I have also had the linkage rod "Popping" off. Common fault that I fixed, had it go again about a year later and then got a temporary clip you clip over to stop it from popping off. This has worked well ever since and was cheaper then the already cheap linkage!
