Clutch squeal at bite point.

Featured Replies

I've had my Octavia VRS almost 5 months now and I've noticed a slight squeal from the clutch as I get to the bite point and it'll only happens once or twice a day. I've done just over 4K and the cars got 45k on the clock.

Ive taken it back to Skoda (who I bought it from) they did usual checks. But wanted £300 to investigate further. I.e take the clutch out. I asked for the worst case scenario, I.e a new clutch and they came back with around £1500. I loath the idea of spending £1800 on top of the original purchase price back in December.

Have a a listen to the attached video clip, I've managed to record the squeal.

Octavia VRS clutch squeal

hope someone can help

My vrs is doing the exact same noise as you described it. Clutch starting to slip at higher rev too but done 90k miles on it and it started shortly after the car was remapped. I recon the noise might be a sign the clutch is on its way out but I could be wrong. I am looking to replace the clutch anyway and A wv specialist garage quoted £800 for 3 parts replacement.

I think you have additional rights for the first six months - unless it can be proved otherwise , the fault can be presumed to have existed when you bought it - take it back to the place you bought it from

Between 30 days and 6 months

If a fault comes to light after 30 days but before 6 months you’re entitled to a repair, replacement or refund.

  • It’s assumed in law that the fault was present at the time of purchase unless the seller can prove otherwise.
  • Unless you’ve agreed otherwise, the seller (dealer) has only one opportunity to repair (or replace) the faulty vehicle after which, if they fail to repair it, you’re entitled to a refund.
  • In the event of a refund following a failed attempt at repair during the first six months the seller may make a 'reasonable' adjustment to the amount refunded to take account of the use that you’ve had of the vehicle.

I’ve got the exact same noise in my 09 TSI VRS with 70k miles. I’m assuming it’s the clutch release bearing. As the clutch is otherwise operating as normal, I’m just putting up with the annoyance until something fails at which point I’ve accepted it’ll be a new clutch.

Hi MasterTom

I started to get this noise about 2 years ago, usually in the winter on a cold engine when first setting off, but on some odd occasions when the engine is warm. Looked at a lot of utube videos, some of them of other motors within the VAG group where the owners had the same problem. Have spoken to a VAG mechanic and he, as well as everybody else, knows for sure what the noise really is. They all agree of course it is the clutch or DMF. He was leaning towards the DMF, but stated nothing to worry about, as he has heard it before. Since the noise started with me, my car has done at least 40k miles, the latest few with a stage 1 remap. It still happens on odd occasions, but I am not at all worried about it. When my clutch eventually goes, that is when it will be replaced along with the DMF and probably that noise will be gone.

Just seen you thread Tom - it was OK when I traded it - certainly no squeal noises on clutch take up.

Did you get to the bottom of the issue in the end?

Just to update this, the squeal on mine became less noticeable during a 3000 mile round trip to France, however, once I returned I booted it coming out of a junction and the clutch didn’t engage properly.  High revs ensued with the clutch pedal fully released and it was as if the clutch was half engaged and came with the burning clutch smell.  Strangely after being parked for a couple of hours parked up the clutch operated normally again. Anyway I decided then to change the clutch and DMF with a Sachs kit. Managed to do it for £700 fitted and have to say the car feels a lot better to drive quickly now.

My update, clutch still does it on rare occasions, maybe once a month at the moment. It does it more often when the engine is cold starting off in the winter. Clutch still works okay though and has certainly not got any worse. Car is still on original clutch at 93k miles.
