Oil change

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 2016 1.2tsi monte with 7k miles on it.

The car rattles for a few seconds when started from cold and I was wondering if I change the oil for a better quality it may help.

My question is, what oil do you recommend and what is the exact capacity with an oil filter change?

It is currently filled with long life oil.

Many thanks in advance.

  • @lawnmowerman, do you really think that there is a plan to increase servicing costs, that just would not work unless all the marques in the same sector were signed in to do the same thing. It might se

Have you not had an oil change yet then?

If the car is set to variable service intervals then a change to fixed service intervals will be better for you.

I have a June 2016 and it has had two oil changes already, but my mileage is higher.

The capacity is 4 litres but the specification of the oil can vary depending on which service interval the car is on.

Thanks AG Falco

According to the sticker in the boot it has variable service intervals. The oil was changed at 3500mls.

I am assuming I can use the fixed service oil or the long life.

Is this correct?

From my experience the Car's computer announces when device is due...

My boot sticker is lots of letters and numbers. How can you tell if it's a fixed or variable service from looking at it please?

The small capacity petrol engines from VW have all been able to be Fixed or Variable Serviced since about 2011 / 2012.

With a Petrol / TSI if you want to use VW 502 00 oil so 5w 40 Full Syntheti for Fixed Serving you can do that , and not use VW 504 00 / 5w 30 FS LL or 0w 30 FS LL.

(Long Life oil, can mean Short Life TSI's IMO. Even using Long Life Oil for Fixed Service Intervals)

A Diesel engine is different, if you must use oil to VW507 00, then be sure you do..

Awaoffski, thanks. So the variable part is just what has been incorporated in to the on board computer info, which informs when a service is due?

Why the difference in oil weight though?

Change your service Interval to Fixed.  9,400 miles (10,000) or 372 days,

or have a Technician change it from Variable.

As to the oil, a rattle is worrying you, and the 5w 40 FS might just have a good effect on that, and the 40 part is good on a TSI engine when hot.

Just because VW 502 00 costs a bit less than VW 504 00 does not make it inferior.

As to 5w 30 FS LL that costs more for certain 'Top Brands' 'Top Named' ,  world famous Oil Producers, cost does not make it superior, just the Corporation Profits Higher maybe.

If you want oil to VW502 00 Spec from a 'Top Brands' 'Top Names',  they produce that as well.

Lots of information for me there, thanks, but nothing about service intervals

Variable servicing is for cars doing more than 25 miles a day at mainly a constant speed. You are doing far fewer than this, at a guess most of your mileage is local and distances short. Did the dealer not discuss it with you? Its clearly shown in Pricing and Specification booklet. Fixed servicing is recommended for owners covering less than 10,000 miles a year.

Over time there is no cost difference, the only saving is time spent in the workshop which is only really relevant to high mileage business users not low mileage private owners.

Thanks for the info.

I think it's a QG1 or QG2 code. I'm sure it tells you in the manual.

Ok I'll have a look,thanks.

My wife's August 2015 Polo 1.2TSI 110PS is on fixed servicing and gets treated to 5W-40 by VW dealer, it is now at just over 19K miles and makes a bit of rattling noises at cold start ups - and it is garaged.

I'd think that the slight short term rattle at cold starts is as good as it gets after a few years and miles, probably a "they all do that sir" thing!  So for anyone with a 1.2TSI 16V petrol engine, get in there and complain if your engine does not make that noise after a couple of years or so and 18+K miles?

I put a couple of numbers in wrong.

QI6 = Service indicator 30,000 km or 2 year ( variable )

I8E = Standard radio (Gen2)

Dealer must have changed it to fixed service.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but why do you say Long life oil can mean short life engine?

Given the issues since 2009 with some Euro 5 TSI / TFSI 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 & 2.0 then it is worth questioning if you have a car you want as a keeper is it worth using VW Groups recommended long life oils.   Now they are changed to VW508 / VW509 on the latest ones.

Fixed Servicing is OK with petrols with VW502 FS which is not Long Life oil.

If you are happy with Long Life oil then that is what VW Group recommend. Not that they care how long your cars engine lasts after the Warranty has expired.

Thanks Offski,

I want to keep my car so 502 looks like the way to go.

Are the 508/509 oils ok , or will they suffer the same issues?

VW 508 is 0w 20 and VW need to use it for the WLTP testing to get lower emissions and better fuel consumption supposedly so going in at the factory.

About £17 a litre i believe and in no way will it be worth it IMO.

4 litres of 5w 40 FS VW 502 00 from ASDA or other retailers is perfect in a TSI.

0w20 jeez, must be like water!

Thanks Offski.

Funnily enough the 0-20 oils are pretty good on viscosity. Oil film strength is also not affected and manages 88-90,000psi using internationally recognised testing standards. Flow rate is exceptional, thus reducing localised hot spots in your engine and providing very good lubricity hot or cold. Wouldn't use it in a 1.2TSI though. Not recommended unless driving constantly in near arctic conditions.

Funnily coming to 1.0TSI near you soon and already in 1.5TSI's globally and that includes the UK.
