New UK MOT. No DPF - No pass?

Recommended Posts

Am I right in thinking that any pre-2006 Octavia diesels will automatically fail the new MOT starting in May because they don't have a Diesel Particulate Filter?

So an 07 plate would pass if the DPF was removed ( If originally fitted )

Age, year of production etc. is irrelevant. If it had one from the factory then it has to be fitted to pass the MOT. If there should be one and there isn't, then fail.

No, any diesel car fitted with a DPF from new will fail if the MOT tester spots it has been removed or has evidence that it has been tampered with without good reason. In addition any diesel car fitted with a DPF will fail if there is any visible soot.

Some cars were fitted with a DPF from many years ago (2002+?) but there were some cars that didn't get a DPF until it was compulsory in 2010  ( A friend has a 59 plate Peugeot 1.4hdi 207 that wasn't fitted with one). Many Kia and Hyunai diesels were only fitted with DPF's post 2009.

8.2.2.1 Exhaust emission control equipment

You only need to check components that are visible and identifiable, such as diesel oxidation catalysts, diesel particulate filters, exhaust gas recirculation valves and selective catalytic reduction valves.

>>>>>>  If a diesel particulate filter has clearly been cut open and rewelded, you should reject it unless the vehicle presenter can show evidence that there was a valid reason to cut it open, such as for filter cleaning.

So if theres no evidence that the Canister had been welded up ( DPF Gutted ) The welded side is not visible due to it's fitted position the car should pass

"Exhaust on a vehicle fitted with a diesel particulate filter emits visible smoke of any colour" will be a fail. If you've had you DPF gutted and rewelded then you'll struggle to get zero smoke out of the exhaust, and as such will fail. It's not just a visual check to see if the DPF is there and untampered.

I assume when they put your reg in on the mot system it must say whether the vehicle should have a dpf?

Otherwise I have no idea how they can tell which should and which shouldn't.

As an example on the mk2 Octavia, the 1.9 Pd 4x4 doesn't have a dpf, whereas the 2.0 Pd 4x4 does have a dpf. The same 2.0 Pd engine in a 2wd doesn't have a dpf...unless it is the vRS which did have one.

The only 2 octavia models  from 05-07 to have a DPF fitted from factory are  the pd170 vrs and the 2.0 pd140 4x4/scout,

so you will be fine .
