Fixing leaking rear shock absorbers...

Featured Replies

As my car likes to get bits wrong with it now and then, the back end looks like it got jealous of the front end getting new parts!

one of my rear shock absorbers has started leaking. Not sure how long it’s been doing it, but will get it booked into the garage in the next couple of weeks.

however, quick question (presumably it’s far to awkward to fix on my drive with minimal tools!) how much is it likely to cost to fix!

Its one of the easiest jobs I've done on the fab. Shockers cost £53 from ecp and dead easy to fit. Just three bolts for each one.

Cheers had best get out my Haynes manual then...

@Wench - As long as you can keep the relevant spring compressed (a bit) it's 2 to 4 bolts on pretty much anything I've seen.

Jack the car as high as you can, put some wood blocks under the wheel and an axle stand under the body, then lower the car onto the axle stand.

I'd strongly advise removing the wheel since it's very awkward to get at the top mount bolts with it in situ.

3 bolts, two at the top and one at the bottom if memory serves me well.

Plastic wheel arch liner has to be removed too. And the aluminium top mount has to be swapped to the new damper.

Here's a video. The car is a Fabia estate but the procedure is basically the same...

Someone in my car's past had slightly cut away the arch liner to gain access to the top shocker bolts. I assume so they didn't have to remove the liner completely. I'm not suggesting this by the way :)

Yes I considered doing that to mine but my car OCD wouldn't let me do it :D

put some plus-gas on the bottom thro' bolt(x2) a couple of days before

Mine is the same, main dealer did the bump stops a few years ago so must have been them the lazy buggers

Same here

My wife's previous car, a 2002 Polo, my daughter's late 2009 Ibiza and my wife's 2015 Polo, all have the area round the top mounting clear - from the factory, why did/does Skoda seem to make sure they are covered up I wonder?

Corrosion trap, earlier Fabias are better built than later ones I have noticed, VAG started whittling at the cost and quality once the car was released.
