Reversing Camera mirror image?

Featured Replies

Is everyone elses reversing camera, a mirror image of reality?

when i reverse using the camera, it's the opposite of what i would see if i simply looked out the back. so everything is the wrong way around and a little confusing.

Is this the norm?

sorry if this is obvious, never had reversing cameras before.

cheers

Can't say I've noticed......................let me pop out to the garage and check it out....................back in a jiffy or two.

Yes it sure does, don't think of it as an issue though.

The best way to visualise the reversing camera is to think of it as a centrally placed mirror that you are looking forwards at. So looking forward into the mirror what is on the right side of the car is shown on the right of the screen, exactly the same as your door mirrors.

What he said. It looks exactly like your mirrors so as not to give you a different image to what you see in the rear-view mirror and cause confusion. Used in conjunction with door mirrors I find a reversing camera a useful addition. It's not a substitute for looking over shoulders though, all around observations still needed. ;)

all good points. many thanks

i would say i am very modern and like car gadgets but struggle to get excited about the reversing camera tech, in Karoq i still do it via looking over shoulder

I think camera on Karoq is pretty good

Is dirt on camera an issue?

It's the same as any other reversing camera I have seen.

Thank you Vectis, but I've never had one.

Do they need extra cleaning between car washes (no off-road driving) to render a usable image?

agedbriar - the reversing camera is cleaned by a jet of water when you use the rear window washer.  I have found that it works very well in shifting road spray off the camera.

Having had a Nissan with all round cameras (nice but only rear is really essential) I carry a pack of baby wipes to clean the cameras if needed. Gritted roads in winter or dried on summer dirt can make them a bit blurry

Hmm, I'm not a fan of using wipes on grit.

Perhaps a small paint brush, when spray alone doesn't make it.

So not as good as the ones on Golfs then... they hide under the round VW badge which only lifts out of the way to expose the lens when you are reversing!

Yes, it is reversed as you are looking at an image behind you, so it has to be reversed to that what you see on the LEFT side of the image is what would be close to the LEFT back side of the car.  This is needed because our brains would confuse left and right and end up crashing into the very object we are trying to avoid!
