New superb L&K smart light assist

Featured Replies

I have just collected my superb L and K and was expecting smart light assist as asked dealer to add this to spec and told numerous times when I allied it had been added.. when collecting car noticed not been invoiced for smart light assist but assured it’s been fitted. I have the eyelashes and these light when lights are on. Is there anyway I can tell definitively?

Rear camera - comes on when I select reverse (manual box) but stays on when I mo e forward? Is this normal as most cars I e sen this fitted on turn camera off as soon as mo e forward

really luv the car though and well worth the wait

Yes, it's normal. The rear camera stays on until you reach 15 kph. Or, you can shut if off yourself by pressing the "P" button on the console (Fig. 276 in the manual).

Thanks, thought it might have been me being thick lol

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the doors also automatically lock at that speed... ?

With the main light selector in Auto, if you push the light stalk away from you it should show a headlight symbol with 'A' in it on the display between the dials if you have headlight assist.

It can take a second or two for the light pattern to change unless you're on a very dark road.

True juux - it will tell the OP if he has a headlight assist system but won't tell him definitively if he has Smart Light Assist as (IIRC) I have the same symbol and I only have High Beam Assist. The only thing I could think is to take it out in the dark and check if the light patterns change (SLA) or it just moves between dipped and high beam (HBA). I still think SLA should be standard on the L&K, but you've heard that rant from me often enough.

Go to the Car menu, select Setup (bottom right), select Lights.

If you have a checkbox item "Dynamic Light Assist" then you have Smart Light Assist.

Physically check the label on ur headlights - if you have Smart Light Assist (SLA), the part number will end in ".B"

for example 3Vx.941.01y.B

x = 1 for LHD, 2 for RHD

y = 5 for left headlight, 6 for right headlight

if it ends in ".A", then you don't have SLA.  You can only go as far as High Beam Assist (HBA).

but you say u ur eyelashes light up - so it sounds like u indeed have SLA capable headlights.

without SLA

Thanks guys, will go and check later

Much easier way to check -- with the lights set to auto, start up the car at night facing a wall, you'll see the headlight patterns change as the shutter moves up/down/left/right before settling into a normal dipped beam pattern.

Really not sure on that one Ian. The headlight dance is the Xenons levelling I believe, rather than evidence of a light assist system, and mine has done it since I bought it (without any light assist enabled). It did it better once the software update had been done (still no light assist enabled) and it did it exactly the same once I had enabled High Beam Assist.

I recently had a Renault Kadjar on hire abroad, had auto everything. The adaptive headlights were rubbish at adapting. 80% of the time late to very late to dip, 30% of the time didn't dip at all. This was in perfect conditions, dark unlit main roads with little at sides to confuse the camera.

Waste of money buying such useless features.

Also closer to home have noticed Mercedes are also slow to adapt, and quite willing to blind pedestrians irregardless.

A decent bright dip is all that's needed in my opinion.

It's not just levelling, you can see the shutter (which steers the beam dark spot over oncoming cars) move a dark spot left and right and then it disappears.

The ones on the Superb seem to work pretty well for me, you can see them aiming dark patches at oncoming traffic (or cars in front of you) and I don't get flashed when using them -- just because the Renault ones are rubbish doesn't mean all of them are. I agree that they don't avoid pedestrians, unless they have headlights...

In the end they're a convenience feature like automatic wipers which are nice to have if they work properly, but you should have the ability to turn them off if you don't like them.

In which case they are non compliant with the requirements of the Highway code.

Rule 114
You MUST NOT

  • use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders

Yeah, but without a reference it would be hard to be sure what you are seeing. All HID-equipped cars I've had do the startup dance and some are more elaborate than others, even without adaptive lighting.

If you have the eyelashes illuminated in the headlight unit then you have smart light assist. You could always go out an drive in the dark to see if it works too.

Sorry to jump on thread, but same/related subject. Have new l&k (just over a week old) with smart light assist..and yes it works, as just been out for a drive in the dark to checka and workmout how to use it. Could see the black area and lights dipping on the offside as oncoming cars came along -cool! Noone flashed me which is good...except one person...So this is just to discuss this one person, they were coming up hill, and I had just crested it the other way and was coming down a shallow bit. My lights did something but remained in full beam (in general) and did something dark bit on the offside (but maybe not enough) but not sure haw much as difficult to tell. Now the guy coming up also blinded me for a short time (I think on dipped beam), and as he flashed me at the last min so I guess I did too, but I'm kind of of the opinion that even doing a dip manually would have blinded him given the road/hill layout....maybe. So can the smart light assist deal with hills well? Can it 'blank'out the lowest bit of the beam (ie bits of the dipped beam)?

Whats the experiances of longer term users?

Non of these automatic headlight functions are meant to be 100% trusted. Manuals also state you should control the headlights in event they do not deep automatically. Its meant as helping not as turn on and forget about it...
I love SLA and it has avoided me having a collision with deer once. When you get used to how the system works, you know when you need to manually intervene and when not. Its really not often when you have to. On Superb SLA works amazing. I didn't expect it to be 100% reliable when I was ordering it with my car. The cost was about 500€ on equipment I took. Well spent money.
