Brake dust

Featured Replies

Went out yesterday for my first decent run (150 miles), taking it gently as running in, very infrequent and light braking involved.

So very disappointed that there's already a lot of black brake dust on the pegasus alloys. Oh how I hate cleaning alloys....

Why oh why can't Skoda fit ceramic brake pads such as those made by ATE which reduce the dust problem significantly (and last longer and are kinder to discs). Is it because it adds £50 to the build cost? Is it because they want dealers to get lots of brake work?

Whenever I stroll though car parks I rarely see such degree of brake dust on even lowly marques. BMW's etc seem to always have pristine discs and little dust.

I would gladly pay for enhanced pads at point of order. As it is, I will wait until the warranty has expired before fitting a set of ATE ceramic pads. Bruised and cut knuckles until then, washing those alloys....grrr....

I believe (and I may be wrong) that during the first 200-300 miles-ish the brakes are still wearing in and dust can be more apparent.  I noticed more when we got our Superb mk2 in 2015 but after its first proper wash (at about 1000 miles) it wasn't too bad after.

I will keep an eye out on my Superb Mk3 as she's being collected tomorrow... I need a suitable name for her...

Might just be that they are brand spanking x-man. My SIII is so much better for repelling brake dust than the SII was. And the Pegasus are the easiest alloys to clean on any car I've had. I posted these in the car care section, but worth a look. Straight after a full spring clean with 2 coats of mint rims:

4 days / 500 miles later:

The second pic isn't great, but there is little to no build-up that I can see. What there may be will come straight off with a jet-wash I suspect.

Hope you're right, time will tell :time:

Get yourself a good fallout remover - Auto Finesse Iron Out is what I use. Spray on, leave for a few mins and jet wash off. You don’t even need to agitate it unless the wheels are heavily soiled.

Jetwashed today with a scrub from the wheel brush (no products - just water). This is the result - absolutely no brake dust at all.

After I took this I dried them with a wheel cloth - they look like new. So my conclusion is that one (admittedly painful) day of sealing will save you hours of cleaning for (hopefully) months afterwards.

Get some Gtechniq C5, not cheap and won't stop the dust but makes the wheels much easier to clean. I only apply it once a year.

My L&K has 19" rims which are diamond ground. I avoid using any acid or alkaline-based wheel cleaners as eventually they may cause discolouration and corrosion of the rims on diamond cut wheels with lacquer finish. I just use mild detergent and water. There are also some pH neutral wheel cleaners.

I then use shop towels to dry them and then use a polymer sealant or wheel wax. You don't need to do this every time you wash them as the coating is quite durable.

I also don't jet wash them as it can break the thin lacquer surface and the prized shiny alloys will start corroding.
