Why?

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Not had the car long and just performed an oil change etc. I had the cover off to get access to the oil filter.

Now I've found that previous owner had removed the small hose on the top which is meant to be connected to the space ship (egr valve) and there is a bolt being used as a plug.

Why? What benefits does this have? Or is this damaging?

Cheers

That will cause the EGR valve to be permanently closed. No exhaust will be recirculated into the intake. Usually causes a fault light, but you don't mention one.

Valve itself,  and inlet manifold will not clog up further with oily soot, but NOx emissions will be much worse. Living in the Highlands this probably won't cause anyone much harm.

Could also have been a faulty egr which was easier just to disconnect as it doesnt do much good anyway

This is nicknamed the elephant hose mod, it vents crankcase pressure to atmosphere rather than back through the engine inlet. It stops the oil vapours mixing with soot and clogging up the EGR, inlet manifold and turbo.

There is no fault light, only noticed it as had the large cover off to get to the oil filter.

Just wanted to make sure that by this the car not gonna die on me...if you get my meaning.

Would that cause a wooshing noise when accelerating?

your confusing that with something else

the elephant mod is something not related to the egr valve.

You're right, misread the original post.

I think built into the egr was an anti shudder valve so maybe your car will shudder, might be mistaken....

Might reconnect it back up and see if there is any difference

On the BLT engine at least the anti shudder valve is used to make engine shut down smoother. Egr and asv are separate.

If you do decide to use the egr system I highly recommend removing and cleaning the system thoroughly.

If it's never been done you're in for a treat when you look inside.

Ok just had a thought and want to double check my theory.

The hose from the "spaceship" had been plugged with a bolt etc.

Surely this would throw up a fault light?

But if it's been deleted via being mapped. (Since I've no fault light) even if I plug it all back up again. This would do nothing?

Since ECU doesn't know about it.

Depends, does the CEL come on with the ignition or has someone 'disabled' the lamp altogether?

CEL comes on and goes off as normal under ignition.

it will probably have been mapped out so the ecu learns to ignore the MAF values for the egr valve. if you reconnect it should still operate however not sure why youd want to gum up your intake with all that extra carbon

That's what I thought. Reason I thought about hooking it all back up is to remove the theory the noise I hear under accelerating is not caused by this.

Probably got a boost leak if it makes a whooshy type noise. Check intercooler pipe connections and add a self tapping screw if any look like they are about to pop out

I'll have a nosey around. Only happens when the car is moving
