So i have the Edition with the Columbus infotainment, do i need to update the maps or is the update portal just showing this years maps and not necessarily a update?

I did that which shows 2018 maps for downloading, my infotainment also shows 2018 already in the system so I don’t know whether to download them and update the system?

It would seem pointless downloading the same maps as you currently have installed. I wouldn't.

The update site says May

"Do not download unnecessarily 12.00GB

  • Check first map version in your navigation.
  • Further update of GPS data will be in May
  • Before saving the map to an SD card - please format it to FAT32 File System and 4096 byte size"

  • 3 months later...

To complete the circle, I have just updated my SD card for the Amundsen satnav files. I followed BOD20's directions linked to on the previous page, but which I now paste below for ease of use.

1. Removed SD card from car

2. Copied SD card contents to a folder on the Windows 10 PC hard drive (for peace of mind only, not essential)

3. Moved "Lock" tab on SD card to unlock the card for writing

4. Formatted the SD card using "FAT32" File system and "4096 bytes" Allocation unit size

5. Off to Skoda website http://updateportal.skoda-auto.com/en-GB and entered VIN number

6. Located appropriate satnav update file for UK (the 12 GB one) and started download

7. This downloaded a file called "Downloader.exe" from Skoda which I then ran and follows screen prompts

8. You have to specify a folder on the hard disk where the satnav temp file will be downloaded to

9. Waited for download to complete - it took about one hour for the 12 GB file on my 30Mbps broadband connection

10. After download I was prompted to select location of SD card attached to computer for "unpacking"

11.It took a further 25-30 minutes or so to unpack the data directly onto the empty SD card

12. Removed SD Card from PC and moved "Lock" tab to lock the card.

The SD card does need to be formatted, the download program will not overwrite the current files - this is the bit that made me nervous but it did not destroy the 'Skoda data' on the card. The download took two hours on my 30mbps connection, so I guess the limit is at the Skoda end (was about 1.5mbps).
