1.8t thicker head gasket and timing belt

Featured Replies

Hi all

After fitting my reduction head gasket I find it difficult to install a new belt with out it being to tight and making that weird belt noise that people get with the ina belts

Different length belt required?

The thickness of the gasket shouldn't affect the belt tension. Personally i would re tension it, sounds like it is too tight. I fitted an INA kit on mine last year and did'nt have any issues, if the belt is too tight, then it is tensioned incorrectly in my eyes.

It will effect the length out of the tensioner range as it's effectively making the belt 1.5mm longer perside and the tensioner is on the limits normally with a stock head gasket. Iv rebuilt this engine 2 times now and have not had issues till the second time using the thicker head gasket

And also you can't tensioner a hydraulic tensioner wrong it sets it's own tension

Anyway I'm making my own manual tensioner now. This is my idler 3d printed prototype

And also if you didn't notice in my video the ****ing pin is still in the tensioner and it's to tight

Sorry what attitude it's text. You've probably miss understood.

As the video links have been removed it's difficult to see what's being referred to but usually the best way of solving something is in a constructive and harmonious way!

Basically if the belts to tight it makes this noise  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IYEYgfABfmk

This was the noise I was getting. It seams like some belts are tighter than others, ina being one. I have a dayco belt and an oem one last time. Anyway I'm chucking my auto stuff and putting on a manual one

Ill ask the thicko question, why the thicker HG? I thought they were only needed (usually) if youve had the head skimmed, in which case the head ends up at the same "height" as pre-skimming?

Plus, if the INA bent is a bit tighter than others, why not just return it and get the dayco one instead?

(Nice to learn about the belt though, im planning on timing belt change on me siggy at next service, was checking belt prices today and INA were coming up a good bit cheaper than Dayco. Be steering clear if its a potential problem  )

@mac11irl - The only other reason I know of for fitting a thicker HG is if you want to drop the compression ratio on a high boost engine, and have run out of other options.

INA kit will be fine on a standard vehicle - i used one on mine last year with no problems

Cant you take material off the end of the tensioner ram, or does the arm that come off the pulley foul on the body around the tensioning ram.

No problems either with my INA kit that I fitted a couple of months ago.

Loads of people for the 1.8t have had issues with belt noise with the ina kit. I suggest an oem belt or better quality belt like dayco. Who cheaps out on something critical. Anyway it's to lower the compression to 8-1 as it was running way to hot with my hybrid and cocked valve guides on big boost. some design picture 3d print then ss

So this is the video of other people's issues read the comments. Looks like ina or gates belts are to tight. Mine was an oem belt but was just to tight with the effective 1.5mm perside extra hence my same noise on my second engine rebuild. I think they make these things on the limits to provide more stretch take up down the line

It won't allow any more slack as the tensioner cam lever hits the hydraulic tensioner body
