Key stuck in drivers door lock

Featured Replies

I've had a quick browse/search of existing threads but haven't found an example of this particular issue.

Our '99 Octavia SE has non-remote central locking, so you have to use the key in the lock to open/close.

Today I went to lock the car and the key action felt a little strange as it turned, then all the windows opened.

I didn't even know that this car had a "global opening" feature.

The problem is that now the key won't rotate back to vertical and therefore can't be removed from the lock.

I used a 2nd key, in the boot lock, to lock the doors but had to unlock again, get in the car, switch the ignition on and motor the windows back up.

I can then lock all the doors, with the 2nd key in the boot lock, but if I wiggle the key stuck in the driver's door then the doors unlock and all the windows come down again.

I've had to leave the car parked with the windows back up (for the 3rd time) the doors locked, but the original key still stuck in the drivers door.

Is there anyway to release the key without stripping down the door from the inside?

Is this an indication that something has broken rather than just got out-of-sequence?

Assuming it's something broken, what's it going to take to fix?

She only passed her 16th MOT yesterday and we were just saying how proud we were of her...

If there is already a thread covering this, then please feel free to point me in the right direction, otherwise a detailed response would be appreciated.

Thanks for the bump but it appears that either no one knows the answer or those that might are too busy to read the forum atm.

Had another jiggle of the key this morning, trying to get it out of the lock, but just lowered all the windows, again  #-o

The key not turning back to vertical is likely a jammed/worn barrel.

If repeated wiggles and a TINY amount of WD40 (or similar) doesn't get the key out I think you're looking at a strip down. sorry for the pessimistic reply!

The windows opening via key/keyfob is a known 'feature' (opinions vary) on VW group cars that catches people out regularly.

Tried some silicone oil spray in the lock but no joy.  Only good thing is it happened at home, where I have a spare key and the car is on the drive.
