Penguins 280 Sportline

Oh and another observation between this and my previous MY17 Sportline; the centre console arm rest doesn't have a ratchet system.  It just lifts and holds position with no clicks.

When you push down on it, does it stay (ie if you lean your elbow on it?)  I thought that mine didn't either, then SWMBO did "something"* and now it ratchets (no noise though) so I can have it half-up and lean on it whilst driving...

* Something is the term used as she doesn't know what she did, and neither do I.  It took around 2 weeks of ownership before this appeared, I was sure until that point it was either open or closed with no in-between

Yes it still stays locked in the preset position but there’s no click as it ratchets up from the most downward (flat) position.

Hi Penguin. Car looks stunning as has rightly been said. A couple of random questions if I may. Firstly the paint - it looks flawless (and your side shots are pretty unforgiving in that department). I saw the products used on the recently cleaned thread, so presume you haven't had a polisher on it. Will it need correcting? If so, what are the plans? Secondly, any particular reason for speccing the rear wiper?

To hwr's point, I found that the way to make the centre console stay at an intermediate position is to pull it all the way up, then reposition as desired (my sofa headrests work the same way). I could have sworn mine ratchets on the way down though - maybe they put it on back to front.:D

I would be interested to hear wax / sealant choice for this colour..

In fairness the dealer did a pretty good job of prep'ing the car.  Not perfect but not as bad as some I've had in the past.

My plan is to properly assess the paint after I've had a chance to decontaminate it with clay, fallout remover and tar remover too.  If needed I'll do a few passes with the relevant hexlogic pad and my dual action (DA) polisher.  I think the paint is pretty much free from many halo's or swirls though so I may be ok with applying a layer of Carlack Complete on a slow speed with the DA and white or blue hexlogic pad, allow to dry/harden and buff off, then I'll use a red hexlogic pad to apply a layer of Carlack Longlife over the top which should give ~6 months protection.  I've also bought some Carlack detailer spray as it's designed to prolong the protection of the Longlife sealant, I always try to use products from the same manufacturer; based on my general rule of thumb that they have likely been developed together and will get the best out of each other and these 3 products have a very good reputation.

The reason I went for Carlack is firstly their reputation and reviews on detailing forums and because the colour is quite a light tone and I think you need a synthetic product to get the most reflection from the colour as you don't have the depth of say a blue or black metallic.  I've always worked to the belief that natural waxes are better for dark<>mid tones and synthetic products are better for light tones, obviously there's hybrid products and then there's using synthetic products with natural products over the top and vice versa.  I want the car to look as crisp/cold and reflective as possible so I'm going with fully synthetic.  Well that's the theory, I'll see how it turns out when I get the time/weather to do it.

@BriskodaJeff I went for the rear wiper purely for function, I appreciate it spoils the aesthetics but I had a Passat CC a few years back and it didn't have a rear wiper.  You could only clear the rear screen with 70mph of wind passing over the car so visibility was rubbish at low speed or after clearing ice/snow.

Thanks for this, and the logic certainly makes sense. Please stick some more pics up once you've had chance to give it the works. Re the wiper I was just interested as I haven't missed / felt the need for one in  the time I've had mine. But I spend most of my time on motorways so maybe that's why.

Added some ‘protection mods’ today. Simple but effective.

Martinek gloss black bumper protector from Superskoda and some door latch covers which cost a few quid from eBay. I’m really pleased with the bumper protector, it goes well with the gloss black trim on the Sportline, looks a factory option IMO.

I’m still waiting for the rear indicator LED’s to arrive from China; those and LED reverse bulbs will be the next mod.

The car has covered nearly 2k miles now and it never fails to draw a smile when I’m behind the wheel.  I’m so glad I got the 280 and made the change from diesel.

Also gave her a wash.

Just as a matter of interest, how long did it take to get the stains out of the alcantara following the launch control?:D

Not had the chance to try launch control as yet.  It's on my 'to do' list :biggrin:

Do you have a link to the seller on eBay you got the latch covers from?

I like them

LED rear indicator bulbs have apparently arrived today.  I'll get them fitted (along with the reverse bulbs) and upload a few pics.

I'd like to find a local 3D printer and see if they can make a bracket for the tablet holder so I can fit two holders into the single slot, in the rear arm rest.

Then just need to get high beam assist and lane assist enabled via VCDS.  There's been a few changes on MY18 and OBDEleven looks problematic so I'd prefer to use VCDS.

Just seen this. Looks great, I hope you’re enjoying :D

Thanks :)

I love it!

Can lane assist be done on my18 with vcds? Love to get that sorted on mine too.

Do you have the A5 forward facing camera?  Triangular cut out on the winscreen, just behind the area where the rear view mirror is?

If you have it then I believe it can be enabled.

The rubber seals on the drivers door are becoming increasingly creaky; I'm surmising it's due to the ongoing warm weather and material expansion/drying.  I've just bought some GummiPflege from Amazon, hopefully that'll sort it:

I had same thing but instead of door rubber seals, the problem was felt seal at the top of the window.

Yep, have the A5 camera. Be interested if yours can be enabled.

Finally fitted the LED reverse bulbs and rear indicators.   Much crisper and brighter output, particularly for the reverse bulbs.  (will take some pics)

I've had the ski hatch handle replaced under warranty.

The car doesn't seem to be as well assembled as my previous Sportline.  I've got creaks and rattles from near enough every door and a REALLY annoying vibration coming from the RH central dash blower/vent.  Above 4k revs it sounds like a swarm of angry bees are behind the dash.  I've got it booked in with my local dealer.

3k miles now covered and the engine is loosening up nicely.  I'm still loving it, despite the onset of some creaks/rattles/vibrations. Though I do have a feeling I'll be stripping the doorcards before long and applying some soundproofing if the dealer visit proves unfruitful.

Makes me think how lucky I've been with mine. Except for the window trim issue (which was well repaired within a week of my phone call to the dealer) I've not had a problem or a sqeak/rattle that didn't sort itself out after a couple days. (Touches head)

I bought a demo. I wonder if the dealership had to sort anything in the first 1,800 miles? Hmmm...

Sorry you are experiencing a few issues Penguin ... like freelunch I also bought a dealer registered one , in fact Vindis MD's car and any niggles may well have been sorted in the 4500 miles before I bought it, as so far not a single glitch .

I do think it's related to the current warm snap and interior materials expanding just enough to be touching adjacent panels etc.

I've removed the umbrella's from the doors just to rule those out and I'll be applying a bit more Gummi Pflege to the door seals to see if they can be cured that way.  I suspect the drivers door in particular needs to be re-aligned or similar as there's a bit of 'play' in it with the door closed.

I've been out in the car a few times this morning and no vibrations or rattles at all though most manifest at higher revs or low revs in a high gear.
