stop/start

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am in need of some advice I have got a 2013 Octavia elegance 1.9 diesel,I bought tis in April this year and she goes well,no problems with anything

except on the dash were I used to get the stop/start symbol I now have the symbol in the photograph, and of course the stop/start does not work, does anybody know what it means other than a fault,Thanks.

The direction indicator and W? It's the compass from the nav. It's the direction you're facing (West). Not related to start stop at all.

Are you sure it's a 1.9 diesel? This engine wasn't fitted to the MK3?

Most likely reason for stop/start not working is that the battery voltage isn't high enough. Is it used for mainly short journeys? Srill on Original battery approaching 5 years old? Does the "vehicle status" screen show any faults/errors?

Hi Ahenners,

Thanks for your reply, compass indicator showing west I havent got a SD card yet for the navigator yet so maybe its just a glitch in the system somewere

and hopefully when I get the card it should clear it.

The engine is a 1.968 diesel so you are right in what you say about that, and the system shows no faults or errors, looking at the battery it looks like a original and I tend to agree with

you that it could be on the way out so I will get a new one fitted and let you know how I get on.

Before you change the battery, you should look in the infotainment system for the StopStart status. (Car->View->StopStart Info)

This will give you some kind of written information why StopStart is not available at the current time.

There can be lots of normal reasons why its stopped working...

e.g.

  - if AC is running & the temperature difference between what you set & the cabin temperature is large (if you set MIN for the temperature StopStart will never work).

  - Engine isnt up to tmperature yet

  - You didnt drive far enough since starting or since last stopstart

  - Battery is charging

  - DPF regeneration in progress

  - etc etc

Theres no reason why a battery shouldnt last the life-time of the car these days as there are many clever systems to manage battery charging & protection.

Hi Gabbo,

Thanks for the information, the AC is minimum so its something to check as is the rest of your pointers I will check all.thanks

Stop start not been working for the past year, despite dealer looking at it for the second time and me doing longer trips. Cold weather was their previous excuse. 12v battery low has appeared again after shorter journeys. I'm not confident they can fix it but want to try before the 2 year manufacturers warranty is up.

Bit off-topic but on my current car I actually coded out start/stop.

On the previous car (manual), even though I did not much like it it, it kinda worked OK - come to a halt, shift to neutral, foot on the brake, car goes off. To start, foot on the clutch, engine starts, shift into gear and off you go.

On a manual car, this is a fast process, but on a DSG car... Start/stop is just a nuisance: when you take your foot of the brake, car starts and at the same time clumsily shifts into first gear (almost stalling) and by the time the gas pedal is responding so much time has elapsed that the light has turned red again ;)

...bit of an exaggeration there, but you get the drift.

I normally get 8 to 10 years out of my batteries so don't be in a hurry to replace it. My battery is coming up to 5 years old and at the service last week they tested it and it was fine.

Battery wear and tear can depend on the use of the vehicle. Short journeys kill batteries.

On my last tranny van (model before the current) the stop / start worked for 6 months to a year when I got the van. The usual distance between customers' houses is a mile, 2 at the most, so the engine doesn't really get upto temperature. Even when I worked away in London, after a 200 mile motorway jaunt either there or coming home, the stop / start wouldn't work.

I think daily use of the inverter charging drills and the like knocks the battery for 6.

Hi all & thanks for your replies & pointers certainly given me something to work on,I will take a few days looking into things & report back.thanks again.

On a DSG car with ACC and stop/start activated car stops and starts dependent on the movement of the vehicle in front.

Do you use ACC on a traffic jam and let the car to that by itself?

I do on the Superb's ACC, however when you are fully stopped, and it says "ACC Ready" on the dash, you need to either pull the ACC stalk to "resume" or tap the Accelerator Pedal before the vehicle moves off again.  Its quite useful for traffic jams where the car just crawls on its own keeping a good distance to the car in front.

I don't think there is enough traffic in Tampere, Finland for me to try that :) I gave it a try once, to see if it would work and I felt that when the traffic resumed, it took a good bit of time to restart (my system starts by itself without the need to intervention)

It left a good bit of space to the car in front, so it is an invitation, specially in bumper-to-bumper traffic for cars to squeeze in, which in turn would make the car systems slam the brakes to keep the distance and make for a very juddering crawl.

DSG & start/stop work well for me. Foot off brake, straight to accelerator, engine starts & moves off straight away

Might be that we have different concepts of "straight away" ;)

Of course, my Stop/start has shown signs of working now and again (pre garage appointment). Noticeably after an eco drive , following the gear change indicator,  with lots of coasting in gear down from the Pennines .

But usually, long or short trips, it is not working. Really, my concern is that the battery is not charging properly.

what does it say in the Stop/Start info menu when you try to stop?

Usually this gives quite clear information about why the stop/start is not available at that time.

Where is this info menu? I just see the symbol with a diagonal line through it when its not working.

Press car then something like view (button at the bottom left) then vehicle status then you will see a StopStart button in the middle on the left.

Press this & it gives you the current status of StopStart & the last reason why the engine was started automatically.

Some hints....
Unless the vehicle has auto-stopped once the message will display "vehicle must be running" when the car is moving/driving.

After you have done one StopStart it will change to say "StopStart System Available" when driving.

There are messages which are self explainatory like "Air Conditioning Request" or "Battery Charge Low" but if your car is performing a regen is will  use the generic message "Engine Must be Running".

Thanks both. Will try pressing car the next time I'm out.

I managed to view the status today which was Power Consumption Is High.

So there is no way to see why it will not work- but only why it last worked?

No, this is telling you why StopStart is not available now.

Once the engine has "autoStopped" & then started again there will be a second line of text underneath which says:

"Last Restart Request: Air Conditioning" or "DriverRequest" etc.

I will try to take a picture from my car tonight to show you.

Power Consumption is High is an indication of high current consumption while you car is running, likely for battery charging but it can be normal things like battery conditioning.

If I remember right from the discussions in the past, It could also indicate a that while the car was stopped with the ignition off, the battery state of charge dropped more than expected.

If was a common message for users with an always-on dashcam but could also be signs the battery is on the way out.

I think some early builds from 2013/2014 also had a battery quality module problem which caused the same thing & required replacing.

After a days investigation, no fault has been recorded. :wondering:Skoda HQ has advised that a control module needs replacing next, under warranty.

I enjoyed a day with a new Karoq DSG 1.4l at least.:)
