1.8 tsi oil issues

Recommended Posts

I know from reading a lot of threads on here there seems to be a lot of other people who have the same issues as I do. But I just want to check with you all here goes

I bought an 09 Octavia 1.8tsi elegance(83899 miles on the clock)  in March and have had the yellow oil light come on 6 times and had to put almost a litre or oil in every time, this is now getting ridiculous I have taken it back to the car sales and he said it had an oil leak which was fixed. But it keeps happing the exhaust looks like my old bmw 320d not a petrol car it is going back to the dealer again this weekend, but I don’t think he believes it’s using this amount of oil (I have only done 1050 miles to nearly 6 litres of oil)look forward to any advice cheers baz

Welcome.

The pinned thread at the top of the page should tell you all you need to know about the Fundamental design, manufacturing, component / material failings of the engine you have.

Known issues, known  by VW, Audi, Skoda & SEAT.

Likely clogged scraper rings which has now caused further problems like bore scoring / valve seat damage / clogging and catalytic converter contamination.

With that level of usage the engine can not continue for a long time.

The fix is new engine or new pistons conrods and rings. Either way it is not a cheap or easy repair.

You will need to research your rights and be very firm with the outcome you want. If you have purchased from a used vehicle dealer you at least have some recourse. But much more limited after 6 months when the onus of proving the fault changes.

You may need to comission and pay for a report from a recognised techician experienced in these engines to progress matters if the dealer shrugs shoulders and is disbelieving...

The figure they give for all engines, 3,4,5,6,8,12 cylinder petrol or diesel from 44kw up is

May use as much as 0.5 litres / 1,000 km,  so 1 litre in 1,242 miles.

*So ar53 covering cr4p.*

Given the conditions in which most in the UK use their vehicles, leisure, pleasure, commuting, business / commercial at UK NSL's in UK Weather, no extremes.

ie Not over Alpine Mountain Passes in high summer towing an Elephant.

Actually in those conditions they might well use no oil....

Vorsprung Durch Technik.   Stuff them, they will just moan, go online and still buy our vehicles!

Hi Bazza1,

I bought a Oct 2 1.8 TSI in September 2016 from a trader and had a very similar issue.  I was checking oil before every journey in the end (baffled me why the oil level was slanted on the dipstick) and even had a s/sheet with the history.  I worked out it was using 1 litre every 350 miles - the Skoda bench mark on that engine is 1litre every 1000km (621 miles).

Spoke with the trader and agreed I would take it to a garage who couldn't identify the issue.  The trader agreed to take the car back and I got a full refund having owned for approx 1 month - The guy was very reasonable to be fair as I had put nearly 1200 miles on it!

Within 1 month I saw it advertised up for sale again and I feel quite sorry for whoever bought it next.

I'd be looking to return the car based on your oil useage and the Skoda benchmark.

PM me if you want to chat further :)

Have your facts ready when you walk in to the garage ... hope it works in your favour.

Incidentally when I rang the trader about mine having seen it re advertised he said it had been to a specialist who had done a full oil and filter change and then driven it and weighed the oil (??) and it fell within tolerance.  No way on earth that an oil and filter would suddenly stop the problems (especially as it was serviced after I paid my deposit a month earlier and I clarified with the garage it had been done and what oil they had used).

This is what the weighing the oil is all about.

Totally useless and not fit for purpose as VW Group main dealer techs often do it, only 186 miles covered or whatever, and not even getting the weight of a litre of oil correct.  ie it is not 1,000 grams a litre as this muppet seemed to have it.

The bottom instructions is how it used to be done.

Very interesting .... might explain how I accurately detailed oil consumption over a few weeks and came up with a reliable figure for consumption and yet1 day in a garage and apparently all was well :D

I'm not sure what a mechanic will be able to deduce without a major stripdown of the engine or a extended test drive. When I bought my 1.8 a couple of years ago I was initially concerned with the oil usage, but changing to 5w 40 and giving it the occasional Italian tune up seems to have got it settled to a acceptable level. Currently using 0.2l per 1000 miles, but I mainly do long journeys every few weeks.

It is not rocket science not even complicated Motor Engineering.

5W 40 FS OK with a TSI with a bit of a thirst, not with a gubbed engine.

To check Oil consumption if a garage is a disbeliever all they need to do is check correctly the quantity of oil in at operating temperature,

(Check it stone cold as well. *Be sure you see then do it, be sure they do not overfill it as some do, or have been known to....)

or they can do the New OIl & Filter Change, seal the dip stick in and the filler cap and send off the car with the owner and say come back in 1,200 miles or so and we will check the oil.

If a warning light comes on sooner the owner could return if near or they can have the car collected for repair / replacement engine or exchange the vehicle for one that has not a gubbed engine.  KISS.

Sorry to ask, I have just bought a 09 scout tsi which has spent most of its life in Yorkshire , would you be prepared to tell me the reg of the one you gave back? Only done about 100 miles in mine so far, don’t want it to turn out to be the one you had problems with!

Cheers

^^^ Any reason you can not just give the Reg Number on this thread so that the unsuspecting / innocent are not landed with it?

No reason at all mate :)

I had a site notification of a direct PM from JJBS3 when I opened the forum site and responded to it in depth with what happened to me.  However it the notifications didn't and still dont show of his response to this actual thread.

My old car was AJ10 PBF, white Skoda Scout 1.8 tsi, Black Front Grill, facelift front and rear badges owned for approx 6-7 weeks around Sept 2016.

Last I saw it was up for sale on a Worcester garage forecourt approx October 2016 and currently a certain on line insurance check facility shows it as being insured.

Just thought I would give you a heads on the progress of my lovely nice clean engine bay of my so called repaired car. Well as you can guess had it back for 4 weeks after the mechanic had repaired it (but the car dealer couldn’t tell me what was done he didn’t know ) and guess what I’ve done 194 miles and had to put 3 litres of oil in as the warning oil light came on twice and needed 1.5 litres each time so it’s got to go back again so who knows this time it’s like I’m banging my head against a brick wall but hey let’s see what happens this time.

When you say dead Engine I know you mean it’s knackered but the thing that I can’t understand is that it’s goes like stink and sounds fine drives like it should,

should it still drive well or should it have given up cheers

sorry rayx I should have said the 1050 miles was before the so called repair and 194 after.

Cut your losses and start the proceedings to return the car for a full refund.  Mine was doing 350 miles to a litre and I returned mine.  I was getting oil residue up the back of the car from the exhaust, do you get the same?

Show them the what the maunual states (1 litre per 621 miles / 1000km) - that's the bench mark and your missing that by a country mile.

As a note mine sounded and drove just fine.
