Cambelt change

Hi,

 

I have recently purchased a 2014 Octavia, 2.0, 36000 miles.

I am planning on driving down to south Germany for several weeks and am wondering if and when the cambelt needs replacing?

There seems to be quite a few different thoughts on the how many years or miles the car can do before it needs replacing.

Any help would be great

This is 2.0 TDI engine right?

 

Skoda UK told me 5 years 140k miles for cambelt replacement.

 

My waterpump went at 4 years 75k miles, so had it done. There's a known waterpump problem with this engine and around you car's time.

I've had a look at the maintenance manual and it says 120000 in dust rich countries, and 210000 in non dust rich countries (which the UK is in).

210000 just sounds a lot!

 

5 years or 140K is quite a difference. Normally I wouldn't worry, but sitting on the autobahn for hours on end, the last thing I want is for the belt, or waterpump to go......

210,000km is ~130,000miles so would match with what wyx078 suggested.

 

I would discuss with your dealer about whether the waterpump has already been changed as it is a common fault cars from 2013/14/15 which appears around the 50k mile mark (so just touching on the time when most cars are reaching the warrenty time).

There are many threads on here with the détails.

 

It is first shown when the coolant temperature reaches just before red-line shortly after starting the car (5-10mins of driving) & you are given a warning to stop the car.

After ~30s the coolant returns to normal & you can continue the rest of the drive without further problems.

Mine has this symptom for around a month before it was changed by the dealer & its fine if you know it might appear.

 

 If the water pump is changed, it makes sense to change the timing belt at the same time as its only the cost of the part extra.

Ah ok, thanks for that, it all makes sense.

 

I doubt if the water pump has been changed as when I bought the car it had done 29000 miles and I can't see any mention of it being changed in any of the paperwork.
I might just pop into a Skoda dealer and see what they say.

But if I do get the water pump changed then as you say, it makes sense to do the belt at the same time.

Changing the cambelt and waterpump seems a standard VAG policy these days. 

I thought the belt and water pump were changed together after 5 years was a precaution I didn’t realise it was such a problem across the range
