HELP - won't start. (diesel vRS)

Featured Replies

Car won't start this morning. Makes a strange clikky noise when I turn the key. Whilst I hunt out the breakdown details from our current account perks, can anyone shed light on what might be wrong?

Stuck starter motor maybe? Time to break out the hammer!

Have you checked the voltage on the battery?

I have neither the know how or the equipment. #clueless

But lights, radio etc all come on when key at first position

Probably dying battery but if you have no tools for knowledge you are going to have to wait for breakdown and pay whatever over inflated price they want for a battery anyway.

I figured as much

Flat battery confirmed and jump started by the breakdown guys. They just told me to take it for a good run to get it charged up, and get it checked over within the next few days but will probably be needing a new one.

Any recommendations for good places to buy/fit a battery, or just head to the nearest "good guys" garage

Do you feel confident to change the battery yourself? if so get 1 off ebay etc. I fitted an 096SP to mine which fits easily and is a higher capacity than the standard 62ah battery. Take the black negative off first and connect it last. You will need to reprogram your clock and reset the electric windows by putting them fully up then fully down and that's it.

If it's the OE battery you've done well!

If you don't want to do it yourself probably the cheapest option is then a local tyre/exhaust/battery centre as they will hold or be able to get a battery t meet your requirements/budget. They will also have a battery load tester they'll test it for free to make sure it's the battery at fault and there's no other issues with the charging system etc.

It is the original battery, and given that we're driving to Holland for our holidays in less than 2 weeks, I'm inclined to just get a new one anyway

I changed the battery on mine last winter as it was having difficulty starting mine after being left (garaged) for a few days rather than risk it. As you're going away I'd agree it would also be better to change it now as having it break down on holiday which would be inconvenient as well as being potentially far more expensive

I would change it asap the advise to take it for a good run to charge it isn't great as if the battery has a duff cell it you could run the car to the moon and back and the battery wont hold a charge. I wouldn't use them but my mil had a battery fitted by halfords ( I was away and couldn't do it for her) for £15 plus price of battery from them.
