Power Steering Issue

Featured Replies

Hi, I have an issue with my power steering.  I've also had an issue with my ABS, the ABS warning light was on but just this and not the Brake System one as well.  This had been the case for about 6 weeks.

My Power Steering went compleatly over a couple of days, first few times it happened I could turn off leave it a few minutes and turn back on and it would be fine however now it's gone compleatly.

I've read a few of the threads relating to PS problems but was wondering if the ABS and PS warnings could be linked, since the PS light came on I no longer get an ABS warning.  Do they both use the Angle sensor?

I'm hoping so as this would seem about the easiest  / cheapest fix of those mentioned (the batteries fine).  I've not noticed any of the flickering light issues others have mentioned in conjunction with PS failures.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Also if anyone can recommend of an independent VAG garage in Derby.

@Rob65 - This might seem like an odd question, but does the battery light show on initial switch on? If not, your problem is probably a broken alternator control wire.

It does, pretty sure the battery's fine.

What year is the car Rob?  Which engine?

What does it have in the way of fancy systems like ASR, TCS, ESP etc.?

Unless the car has ESP, I think the angle sensor on the rack is only doing business with the PAS module, not ABS.

Find someone with vcds or vcds lite and do a scan. That'll tell you if its separate issues or the same.

i had similar issues, the PS pump was gubbed. They have a terrible design, end up getting soaked from the road and corroding, abs light 9/10 of the times probably just a sensor, again vcds will clear this up... I'd offer to do it but I think your probably miles away.. Vcds lite is 100 quid and the cable is only about a tenner, this done the job for me and has been VERY handy

Thanks for the replies so far. The cars a 2006 Classic model with the 12V  HTP engine.

If it is the pump any ideas on where I can get a cheap replacement?

Did you find out what was wrong?
I just had my power steering go off; it came back after I let the car stand a few minutes without ignition and then turned it on again...

LarsB  -  That's exactly what mine did the first few times.  Which makes me think it's not a fuse because surely they would just work or not.

Funnily have just taken it to the garage to get them to check the code about 10 minutes ago.

Diagnostic Result

01309     Power Steering Control Module (J500)             Upper Limit Exceeded

Think I'm just going to get a 2nd hand PAS off ebay and get them to swap it during its MOT

@LarsB @Rob65 - If you're losing PAS intermittently on a hot engine, check the electric pump connections and clean and electrically sound, because resistance rises as they get hot (and that circuit switches a lot of power).

Also check the strip fuses on top of the battery. They can develop very fine cracks which can cause intermittent contact.

Halfords sell the fuse strips off the shelf with all those bits and bobs they sell.
