07 stood for a while; stiff gearstick

Our sore-nosed estate has stood with it's  previous owner for a while (6 months) before we bought it.

 

On driving it home I found the gearstick movement very stiff but the gears fine once selected.

 

I'm assuming the linkage from gearstick to gearbox is sticky and will ease with use.

 

Is this a valid assumption or do I need to do something to alleviate the problem now?
