De-cat...? Safety implications?

Featured Replies

OK... This sounds dodgy as anything I've ever done before, but.

What are the implications of smashing up my cat and blowing out the bits, repeat until clear??? (effectively creating a de-cat)

I'm not one for spending a lot of dosh on the car (says he about to shell out

what about replacing the cat with a plain pipe save ruining

Your car will fail its next MOT , and a DIY job with a hammer is likely to damage the exhaust so it starts blowing.

If you want to De-Cat then get a proper replacement section.

The tdi has an very different sort of cat to the petrol engines as diesel is more toxic and throws out more crap. i suppose it can be done but the filth may spot you a mile off so how about removing it and replace it with some steel pipe and jubilee clips to try it out.

add to that you'll proberbly clog up the silencers with bits of cat.

I thought that diesel cats were more to restrict particulates entering the atmosphere, rather than gases, as this allows diesels to meet EC targets for particulates. I think you could get away with a de-cat diesel at an MOT station, as long as it wasn't too smoky. But I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell me I'm wrong.

Hmmm. Interesting... I can get around the MOT thingy, if ya know what I mean, but I should probably consider the pipe option as opposed to the smashing with a bar, and just refitting.

TBH I think I'll leave it alone and see what Jabba can do with it as standard.

What cat!

Jason, the only safety implications are those relating to the injury you are likely to do to yourself whilst doing the mod! :(

He's at it again isn't he?

One more thing Jason, before you ask...

NO you can't remove the cat and replace it with a piece of 4 inch Soil pipe from B&Q, that's only for air intakes ;)

Or that extension bit from the Dyson.

He has "other uses" for that, so i hear ;)

Oh, so he's on his own alot too then. :D

(We're allowed to go wildly off topic on this one because quite frankly Jason's original post has crossed any established line of silliness that we may have had in force on Briskoda.)

Denis! How could you be so cruel to young Jason? I mean, come on! What's the chances of him actually hurting himself or his car whilst....

oh.

Carry on :)

No, no, no! That would be illegal! ;)

OK ok - less of the self abuse with the Dyson talk, eh?

Jon. Do I take it the ;) is to be taken in irony? :D

I'm going to speak to a local powerflow dealer following talk with a certain other distinguished member, and see what they say. My work has a fair bit of 110mm rainwater pipe going, so I can't see that not being suitable to use? ;)

If I do this, I'll need to f***in quick because I'd want it done before the remap so it will be suitable. Decat after remap won't be quite the same methinks (and another thinks) Anyone know, before a remap, what does a decat do for fuel economy?

cake have can't you your and it eat

rearrange to make a well known phrase

Yep, Powerflow in Exeter are very, very good (its where the Powerflow University  is located) and will do a good job on it.

Anyway, why do you want to do this? You got a friend called Sweep? :D

Someone offered to smash my cat up for me for free, and this got the mind ticking... Whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous BMW drivers, or if it's worth getting my car de-catted before the remap.

A friend offered to smash my cat up and I just got wondering about it really. I may pop into the local powerflow place ("save on tyres & exhausts" I think they're called) and see what they can do for some

Hello all! I may appear new to the site although I'm not- I have been visiting for some time as a guest. The reason being that you lot amuse me! You may remember Jason referring to me as his mechanic mate(the one who fitted his spings). Also the person who offered to smash out his cat. Anyway I knew it was time to sign-up and have my say. This is because most of the views expessed on this thread a VERY wrong. Take it from someone who was smashed out lots of cats. The smashing out is very simple, once its all broken it will all come out. You will know if there is any left by wobbling the box and listening for the rattle hence no worries about left over bits causing problems. The only audible difference will be that you can hear the gentle whisle of the turbo on the tailpipe(a noise I'm quite fond of!) The performace gain is very noticable, particularly on a TD. You would have to be a complete tool to damage the exhast to a extent that would make it blow. The MOT isn't a problem so long as you know where to get it tested.... this could be a problem for some of you. The fact is apart from that it is a really good idea and it works a treat!

Well that has to be the most idiotic post I've ever read here.

Muppet.

Very true...

But it'll be a problem for Jason when he sells his car on with a dodgy MOT and the new owner comes looking for him. I'm damn sure i would. ;)

Or would you like him to shell out a few hundred quid on another cat???

What the hell is wrong with a de-cat pipe anyway ???
