Octavia VRS mk2 used buying advice?

Featured Replies

Hi all, tomorrow i am taking a look at a 2010 skoda octavia vrs 2.0 petrol with 62k miles on the clock. from what i hear by word of mouth skoda octavias are very robust reliable cars and this seems like a good blend of performance and practicality for me. I just have a few questions before i decide to purchase,

Is the engine a tfsi or an fsi? as on the engine cover it says fsi yet its described by the dealer as a tfsi, is there a difference?

is this car belt or chain driven? and if belt when are the change intervals?

what sort of mpg figure should i be expecting on average?

how harsh is the ride quality on the larger vrs alloy wheels?

are there any common problems with these cars i should keep an eye on?

Many thanks,

Branden.

It's a TSi turbocharged stratified injection with a chain drive. Can't help with ride and mpg because I have a very different spec 1.8.

Apparently the chain tensioner "can" fail, taking out the engine. Most suggest an updated tensioner is fitted as a precaution and that costs about £650.

Make sure you get a warranty, keep a very close eye on oil consumption and get it in writing from the dealer that if it's out of spec it can be returned. Some of these engines drink it faster than petrol. Official oil consumption allowed 0.5l per 1000km, but if you're getting even close to that I'd be worried.

Apart from that, it's a great car!

Yes. As above. Good advice.

See sticky thread in this forum for engine failure woes.

I,ve got a 2011 DSG. I can expect up to 40mpg motorway 70 and under.

Dropping considerably on start stop urban driving.

My mix of driving probably averages about 30mpg.

I found the ride on mine extremely harsh. A really good car but ride quality and tyre noise were my reasons for selling back in 2013.

Good luck.
