Dashcam help needed

Featured Replies

Hi,

Sorry if this has been asked already, but i cant find it.

We have a Yeti, couple of years old, (love it BTW). Just got our first dashcam.

Tried using the cigrette socket, but the cam seems to be permanintely live, so the ignition doesnt start/stop  cam recording.

So i guess need to hard wire the dashcam. The dashcam just uses a small USB socket for power.

Can anyone help with what harewire kit i need? and how to hide the wires?

This is what ive gleamed form the web so far (rightly or wrongly)

You use a piggyback connector on the rear windscreen wiper fuse, but ive no idea where to get the right one.

Hide the cable behind the pillar cover but need to take the cover off (somehow) without blowing up the air bag lol

Any help appreciated.

Simon

Most folks hardwire with a piggyback into rear wiper fuse 7.

thanks urrell, is ther only one hardwire kit type to get? or how do you know which one to buy?

The dashcam is by OldShark, i know its not Nextbase or anything, but hey it was £35 on amazon Prime day lol

The instructions for cam say 5V-1A for a hardwire kit

You can buy the bits you need - piggyback fuse, USB connection etc. easily of eBay or Amazon. Two choices as to converter 12V to USB voltage, first is to buy a converter (or the complete package from Nextbase), second is to buy a "cigarette lighter" socket kit and wire that into the fuse box then plug the provided cigarette socket connector you have direct into that. There is plenty of room in the fuse box for either route, I used the 'cigarette' socket route because it was cheaper! Pillar cover comes off with a hard yank, best to start at top and there is no problem with the airbag. Refitting is also fairly easy but make sure the clips line up before pressing it back on. Despite my trepidation it took me less than 20 minutes to do the whole job and once done it is completely hidden. The only slight annoyance is that the piggyback fuse sits slightly proud of the fusebox so the cover has a very slight bow when reinstalled, nothing to be concerned about but another 1mm deeper then it would be perfect.

If you do a search there are detailed illustrated walk throughs of fitting a dashcam to a Yeti with every stage described in detail with photos. I think the best is on the "other" Yeti forum!

Oops, as you can see I meant fuse 6

Quite easy to do.

Slide a thin blade under the fuse box cover to lever it off.

Kit off ebay comes with piggyback fuse, voltage converter, and cable.

Pull out fuse 6, replace with piggyback connector, and insert old fuse into it.

Connect earth wire to one of the bolts holding the fusebox in.

Tuck voltage converter in fuse box.

Hard part is threading cable out of fusebox, then gently push up under trim.

Replace fusebox cover.

They do say check the piggyback fuse is in correct way round by not inserting old fuse and checking rear wiper doesnt work with ignition off.

With regard to airbag,  make sure you pass the cable behind the bag rather than in front; don’t want to impair the deployment of the bag should the worst happen.

Recently purchased a Dashcam from Halfords, fitting kit was £20 but if Halfords fitted (£30) was free so for £10 fitting, desicded this was easier and quicker than trying to install myself and work out fuses etc.  MAde a very good neat job and only took them 15 minutes.

I installed a 4 way usb unit with separate power take off for the dashcam in the top storage box. I used a 15a piggyback fuse in slot 6 (rear wiper). I took the earth connection into the crossbeam under the box. I then put a wireless charging plate in the box, so I just chuck the phone into the box and hey presto it charges. All the bits came from RS components and cost less than £20.

Nice, I’ve always thought it would have been so easy for Skoda to put a USB port in the top box. Simply not clever.

Shame both the Karoq and Kodiaq don’t have a top box.

Hi - T..D..I (E)..

(1) Check this out. It may be of interest or help - I hope so!  LINK

(2) I'm pretty much sure that the Karoq does. At least depending on whether you have opted not to have the Canton sound upgrade. Skoda refer to it as "Storage box in upper central dashboard" - If memory serves me correctly it has a sliding lid. At least I hope so, but we will see when we get our new 1.0 TSI SEL DSG.

Hope this helps.......Tony
