Skoda Superb 3, convert RHD to LHD

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a beautiful Superb L&K from the UK, but unfortunately the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car. :))

Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to change from RHD to LHD? I really love this car and I would like to see it happen.

Was it done by any of you ? If yes, what are the costs, parts, etc.

You can advertise a mechanic if you were happy with the conversion.

Well, it wasn't a troll line :) I just want to know if it has been done and how much did it cost. Last, but not least, if you are happy with the results.

If still in doubt, i attached a photo of the Superb

I think the only viable option is to sell the car and buy one with the steering wheel on the correct side.

I'd be very surprised if it's possible to convert...

As above lol ! Why didn't you but a left hand drive car ?

I would have thought the costs involved, along with the work, would have been prohibitive.Add to that, an insurance company might sting you as its converted and as mentioned earlier, it may be better to sell this and buy one for driving on the wrong side of the road! We Brits do keep asking you Euro peeps to switch to the correct side but you will insist on following those daft Americans!:D

And I thought my chosen dealer was a long way from home:D

Bit of a reach for the ACC though...

An American friend of mine had this done to a US car he had imported into the UK. So it can be done. Think it was pretty dear though. Whether it makes any sense in this case would depend on the price paid and the prevailing price in Bulgaria. The price difference between France and the UK - about a third more in France - was big enough for me to order mine via the UK with LHD (a new build ordered through a UK company doing diplomatic/military sales).

Didn't the Rover SD1 have a blanking plates on top of the dash and in front of the passenger seat,  so that the Steering wheel and binnacle could be easily swapped over for LHD markets?

How did MG Rover go out of business with that level of engineering ingenuity? .  There's clearly a use case for it.

Better than that, the spare steering column hole was the passenger side air vent.

There will be someone in Romania that will do it for you cheap enough, or at least take the car and a deposit.

Is the car legit as in bought in the UKfor cash money from the owner of it,  and then taken to Romania and going to be registered there.

Not making assumptions or implying anything, just curious.

I aint so cynical as those wrong side driving Brit's! Boooo shame on you Brit's, driving on the wrong side of the road and talking bad on @cristianene lil car building project.

Well @cristianene. Easiest way would be buyin yourself a donor L&K Superb. It must be in mint condition, LHD and exactly how you want you Superb. Then you take floor mats from your RHD Superb and put them in your LHD Superb and voila!

Ahhh darn, RHD floor mats won't fit on LHD car:blink:

Ok, if the floor mats swaping does not work, then I would first recommend you to ask your country car registy if RHD to LHD conversion is even allowed in your country. There are countries in Europe that it is made very very difficult. Next thing would be considering your budget. Bare in mind, that you need entire set of pedals, new dashboard, new center console, new window switches panels and some more. If you would buy all those things new then you could look freely at 7 000 euros budget with labor. If you can get stuff from scrapyard, then you might be able to manage with 5 000 euros. Such parts are very expencive and labor costs hard to calculate.

L&K interior door card sells for 500 euros (dealer price, yes, I asked them) so what do you think they would want for entire dashboard?

And if RHD to LHD conversion is allowed in your country, then get yourself ready for lots of red tape and all kinda fees.

I doubt that UK version buying price + 7 000 or so euros would be cheaper than similar L&K with LHD.

it would make sense doing such a conversion if there was no LHD made for the Superb.

but there are LHD Superbs that roll off the factory floor.

even if u changed the entire dashboard to be LHD, u'll also have to change:-

- wing mirrors

- headlights

- gear selector (assuming dsg)

then there is the compliance and certification of the whole conversion.

then there is insurance.

as others have said, ur better off selling this one and buying a "ready-made" LHD Superb.........

and more importantly, why did u buy the car in the first place if u needed a LHD car?!?!??!?  geez

Add

Rear fog lights

God only knows what you need to move under the bonnet to re-locate the steering column.

Headlights you do not even have to change because you can set LHD or RHD from your infotainment screen. I think that they made such option for people to be able to drive their RHD cards on LHD countries (and vice versa). Otherwise British tourists could not drive their cars on French roads (that I have understood is very popular).

So @JR RS, if you ever ended up in Estonia to have a couple of beers with me, you can bring your Superb along!:)

You would look like a postman driving it around here though....

Tourist mode doesn't convert between RHD ECE beam patterns and LHD ECE beam patterns.

Normally it'll either flatten the beam or just drop the projectors slightly to avoid glare, it's not designed as a permanent solution :)

Ur talking about Tourist mode dude.

That just flattens the beam, as @langers2k mentioned.

3V1 is LHD headlights.

3V2 is RHD headlights.

I'm going to pass on having beers with u thanks :-P

Pftttttt!

(That comment was about passing on beers. I personally blame the strong dry Australian winds that mess up your hair. What full witted person would pass free beers?!?!?!)

So, I came with a question. Although I enjoyed your laughs and giggles, I'll explain.

The car is a 8000 miles 2017 superb l&k. It was bought with 7500 £. Needs a little bodywork on the left side. It's a petrol (benzin) DSG.

That being said, I truly believe it's a great offer.

In terms of converting, there are no known issues with law or insurance companies.

I fell in love with this car the first time I saw it but I didn't have enough budget to buy it money down. ( I don't believe in working with banks for loans or leases)

This felt like a nice project. And I thought that fellow forumistas are the helping kind, not the mocking kind.

By all means, I can keep the car as is, but I never drove a RHD.

OH,

When I said it needs a little bodywork, I meant this:

It's just a bit of banter. If you can't filter it out there's always that communist romanian vw forum that censors everything that ain't serious.

That'll buff out ;-)
