New Brakes... Suggestions?

My 2013 vRS TDi Estate is now in real need of a replacement brake setup consisting of disc's, pads, fluid and probably hoses. 

 

Any suggestions on brands? 

Pagid appear the closest to OEM, but the car is running a stage 1, so I'm keen on a little extra stopping power, but do not want to spend huge on a 'Big Brake Conversion' if I can help it.

If you search Boss Fox Yeti vRS thread for brakes he has some high recommendations for some far eastern pads and discs.

 

 

Unless you are putting the car on a track the standard brakes should be all you need for a Stage 1 TDI especially as you should have the 340mm fronts on a 2013 car. What specifically don't you like about the braking?


Brembo standard disks (if not then ATE) along with ATE pads are my go-to replacements. They are a step up in quality over other makes. Make sure your system is flushed with fresh fluid unless it has been recently changed or tested. Bleed it really carefully. ATE super blue DOT4 is what I always use (which isn't blue any more)

 

If I was being really pedantic I don't find the 340mm(F) / 272mm(R) as balanced under hard braking as the 340mm(F) / 310mm(R) or 312mm(F) / 272mm(R) set-ups but never found much issue with standard vRS-sized brakes.

Mine stg 1 and had no bother with brembo discs and pads. Pagids were sh1te and noises which o was gutted about because found them good on other cars in the past. I think their fast road stuff is a world apart from the stuff the ECP pedal. I am looking for new discs as we speak and have found some kinetix drilled discs on eBay and thinking of trying those. With brembo pads. Just go into eBay and put 340mm skoda and they’ll come up 

Dont go near MTEC and avoid grooved discs, dimpled drilled are ok but grooved are unbearably noisy, GSF are doing 60% off at the moment, and there are several options but better to call as the website isnt great.

Again, this is a personal opinion, but I don't use drilled disks. With the modern pad materials lots of reasons not to use them. Seen a few crack and fail myself.  Grooved disks are OK but they have to be well designed for them to be quiet. Curves, 's-curves', or 'j-hooks' are generally quieter.

 

If you are replacing them for looks then the more the merrier but you wont necessarily improve your braking by much, if at all. Problem is sometimes you give yourself  problems like noise/pad wear/dust/cracking. I use plain disks on everything I have.

Generally I'm not really looking for aesthetic gains so much as the desire for adequate stopping power.  I'm content with plain disk's providing both disk and pad do the job.

Also got no problem with the OEM's other than they are now low and 5 years old.

If I can increase my stopping performance (for road use only), then now's my chance.

 

I'll take a look at the Yeti build and see what's occurring there :)

 

Standard Brembo Disks & Pad's perhaps appeal as a nice step up from such a recognised brand, and I do intend to flush the system as i'll be upgrading my brake hoses.

 

Thanks again guys.  I'll obviously let you all know how I get on and maybe a cheeky picture once fitted.  I'm beginning a build log soon, as I've decided to modify the car over replacing with a different one to keep my interest alive.

I was toying over putting a post on here offering to swap with anyone for the same car, but a TSI DSG (Instead of my diesel manual), but I didn't think it would win anyone over, so I'll play with her abit instead.

 

You will probably find that a lot of brembo discs are now made in China and Brembo don't made their pads either but out sourced to company such as TMD friction so you are basically paying for brand as folk normally associate  Brembo with their high end brake systems.

 

If you are after UK brand you can't fault plain ebc discs and ebc red stuff pads as a minor upgrade compared to stock pads

Red stuff take a LONG time to bed-in but, very worth it, can wear discs as fast as pads though

I found red to be quite dusty and greenstuff even more so but that was on a 3.0V6 Clio. I wouldnt touch mintex, mine had a curved profile and picked up stones far too easy. I had to swap them out after a couple of hundred miles and am now on brembos back and front.

What about the brakes setup as on the 560+bhp superb setup seen on this forum (if I'm not wrong, it's Tarox discs and ferodo ds-2500) ?

The plain Brembo disks I have used in the past have been a noticeable step up in quality, balance, tolerance and finish when compared side by side with the run-of-the-mill 'replacements' They take more abuse and I have less problems with them (actually none) than other 'replacements'  I don't use Brembo pads, I always use ATE. ATE disks are similar quality but not as well finished.

 

If you are running 560bhp then I would be running a whole different setup, but we are talking about a stage 1 TDI here.

 

If your car is a daily driver you have to be careful you don't mess up what you have, many 'performance' setups need at least some warming up to be effective. Personally I need my brakes to be 100% from cold and in the wet on a car I use every day in all conditions.
