Fabia Mk.3 side repeater bulb change

Featured Replies

So my Fabia's right side indicator bulb in the mirror blew the other day. As Skoda conveniently don't mention how to change this in the manual, I thought I'd write up a little how-to in case anyone needs it. I would presume that this guide would also apply to the Rapid/Toledo and the facelift VW Up, which look to have the same mirrors (weirdly the Mii and Citigo seem to have kept the wing-mounted ones!)

It's very simple- took me less than 5 minutes.

You will need

New bulbs- WY5W amber turn signal bulbs. I bought these off Amazon because I'm lazy and didn't want to go to a shop.

Something to depress the clips inside the mirror housing. I used a regular table knife (don't use a sharp one! I take no responsibility if you hurt yourself or damage your car)

Removal of mirror cap

Turn on the car's ignition, and lower the mirror all the way down, so from the driver's seat all you can see is the ground.

Look just above the mirror glass. You should be able to see two plastic clips in the same colour as the mirror cap. In my car these were easy to see as they're red, but if you've got a black car they may be hard to see! It's a lot easier to see what I mean in this picture of the cap once it's been removed.

They're the two clips either side of the peeling white sticker at the top of the cap.

These two little clips need to be pressed downwards until they click. This is what you need the knife for. Gently press them down, I started with the inboard clip and applied a small amount of forward pressure on the cap to make sure they stayed 'clicked'.

Once both clips are detached, the cap slides off forwards.

Replacement of bulb

The old bulb is held in a small rubber grommet just above the lens. However, before removing this, you need to make sure there is enough slack in the wires so you don't damage anything.

Pop the wires out from their retaining clip (just to the right of my finger in this pic), and then gently lever out the rubber grommet. It's just a push fit.

Once you've got the grommet out, the bulb is a simple push fit and is very easily replaceable.

Reassembly is just following the same steps in reverse.

I would recommend testing the bulb before you put the cap back on, in case the bulb isn't seated correctly or if it's an LED bulb, it isn't in the correct polarity.

Success!

It definitely took me longer to type this out than it did to change the bulb!
